What Diet to feed your dog to lose weight?
So your vet just told you your dog is fat and needs to lose weight?
Personally, I like to say big boned but anyways haha lets go over some diets and daily things you can do at home to help your dog lose weight.
Weight loss is the same for pets as it is for us humans:

1) Cut back on calories
2) Exercise more
3) Less snacks
4) Drink More water

But the easiest way I like to help pets lose weight is Prescription weight loss diets:

My ultimate favorite diet to use for weight loss is Hills WD – this is a low calorie, low sugar diet for diabetic pateints and it seriously takes the weight off. Feed them the recommended dose on the bag. It comes in wet food too! Which I love topping my dogs food off with to help entice them to eat it and they love it!

Now other diets for weight loss that work too for dogs are:
Hills ID low fat
Royal Canin GI low fat
Royal Canin metabolic
And Royal canin satiety

All of these diets are prescription diets and you need to go to your vet to get a script for them.

All of these diets are focused on lower fat and calorie conent but you can still feed your dog a good amout twice a day and they will lose weight.
Now the no brainer: Cut out those table scraps and left overs.
Seriously, NO people food if you want your pet to lose weight.
Pizza crust makes dogs gain weight so fast!

You can give your dogs fruits and veggies!

Ok guys remember a thin dog will live longer than a fat dog! So try your best to keep your dogs in shape.

I wish you would show us things we can do at home without a vet. Its very expensive to go to a vet to ask for a script diet bc they will want to run tons of test before they prescribe the new diet

I moved out of my mom's house a while ago. When I left, my dog was a healthy weight (he was a baby lab, I kept track of his food, took him on walks, played, etc.)
My mom is extremely stubborn and when I try to tell her slight bumps from the ribs are healthy, she complained he wasn't eating enough. But I know he was healthy.
Now it's been 3 years, and my lab who is now 5, is either 100lb or heavier. He's obese. Disgustingly obese (I love him, but it's disgusting because I know he's not healthy).
My grandmother and her sister "take care" of my Krypto, and now he looks like a meatball, a loaf of bread. He's 5 and he looks 14.
So now I'm telling my mother to give me the responsibility of my boy again, to let me put him on a diet but we don't have the money to help him with prescription diets.
I need a diet for him that will wean him off eating such large portions, while also helping him lose weight (in a healthy way) without risking any major problems for him because I know he has a motherload of problems right now.

A home diet recipes:
Meats:
Any kind of organ, meat, lean, turkey breast, lean, skinless chicken breast, 90 to 95% low-fat beef

Veggies/ green:
Carrots, apples, peas, Beets,
Green beans, leafy greens, pumpkin, and sweet potato, or a good source of fiber, broccoli, cucumbers, brussels sprouts

You can cook lentils in water or chicken or bone broth. Just extremely low sodium.

You can sauté with coconut oil and turmeric, olive oil is good to, but in moderation with any of these

I would never ever give my dog either of those dog foods.. Look at the ingredients! Full of synthetics, man made garbage, corn and or wheat by products and very very VERY little meat! Im shocked that a VET would say to give this to a dog.. Everyone knows that a dog in the wild eats meat.. Not synthetics, not man made garbage, not corn or wheat by products.. MEAT... That and honest and true vegetables.. If your dog is fat its because hes not getting enough exercise and not getting the proper diet.. No way I would give this crap to my dog.. Especially those low cost brands found at Walmart, Target or PetSmart.. Even Hills Brand has very very little meat in it.. Good lord thats like us eating McDonalds every single day..

How do you feel about obese dogs and metformin type medications to lose weight? Nothing I have done works. She has anxiety/aggression with food issues. Thanks.

Dr, would you mind advising why a weight restriction diet needs to accompany a prescription? This is bewildering to me?

Also, check their thyroid! Before you starve your dog. This should be addressed.

Hello, I have a 1yr 6mo old golden retriever and she's 37 kgs even tho she's not very tall, she's not obese but she is overweight and has a lot of fat, her diet is has very low calories and I give her excersise throughout the day, I make her run behind my cycle for 30 mins a day, I play fetch with her for 30-40 mins a day , I walk her for 3 km 2wice a day and at night I walk her on the treadmill on trot speed for 40mins and she does not seem to reduce much weight, show reduced a little a few months ago and I've been very consistent with the routine and she's still just as fat as before, please help me as I've looked for solutions everywhere and my vet also doesn't know Any solution, also she overheats very quickly and has very low stamina despite all the excersise so please help me she's everything to me
