I worked at a Pharmacy before. A patient used to come all the time to get his pills for pain. He was always so pleasant and calm and polite.
On day his partner showed up and we asked about him.
He had committed suicide the day before after leaving a letter that simply explains he could no longer deal with the pain.
Pain makes you depressed, angry, frustrated. It also drives you to act completely different to what people expect. It’s not joke. And the worst insult is to have people telling you are not in pain. It’s beyond insult. It denies you of the dignity you as a human being deserve.

People who have never lived with chronic pain have absolutely no idea. It becomes your "normal". You learn to live with it and do some things that look normal even though you're still in pain everyday. There are also different levels of being disabled. Not everyone needs a wheelchair. They act like because he rode a bike and ran across a street that means there's nothing wrong with him. Lol. Adrenaline masks pain. Also just to clarify: millions of people have pain and don't gun down CEOs. There is more to his story than back pain. I was just pointing out Banfield's blunder. It's mostly just the media spinning this "back pain" story because they have nothing else. They're making huge assumptions. He could have been feeling totally fine.

This doctors denial of his pain is the exact reason people get so desperate.

No one should go this doctor - he DISMISSED how serious pain is.

As an RN, over 40+ years, personally I’d never have elective back surgery. There is such a thing as “failed back syndrome” where the surgery was NOT successful a lot of times because post-op walking or movement eventually works the screws back out or shift in the body thus requiring another back surgery and you’re on the worlds hellish merry-go-round of pain vs surgery. I’ve seen the same patient have one after another back surgery and never get better and are permanently disabled. It’s a case by case basis but by no means is it a one size one time fixes all promising no pain!

I have severe and debilitating back pain. If my house was on fire, I would still manage to run out, even though I’m limping most of the time.

The leading cause of bankruptcy in this country is from medical bills. I know this first hand.

That doctor doesn’t know what he saying. I had the same surgery and I can relate to this young man suffering with pain every day. Looking at me, no one would know how much pain I am in.

The guy was in pain constantly. Wouldn’t you be pissed off too?

NO WAY absolutely not. This doctor is so wrong. I have the same exact thing and as you are in pain pretty much 24/7 some days are better than others. Also if you take pain medication, you can absolutely do what this guy did. I am shocked that a medical doctor just said what he said.

There is a well-documented correlation between back pain and mental illness, particularly conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders.

Poor kid. The pain, possible pain killer useage, dealing with the insurance industry etc. sent him over the edge.

I know many people who have had multiple back surgeries and are still in pain. Pain management becomes a big problem as doctors don’t want to prescribe opioids due to the opioid crisis and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was also an issue for him. I wouldn’t think coverage would be a problem for him due to his family’s wealth, unlike many of us. However, frustrations with our healthcare system has been a problem for years . There is still much more to this story.

Don't do the surgery. Exercise and make the back surrounding muscles stronger! Dehydration due to drinking alcohol, or not drinking enough water must be managed during the healing process. I've been through this and was able to heal myself without having back surgery. It is hell when you have pain. It is never ending hell after you've had surgery!

You can be in severe pain and be in rage, and run if you have to.

This is a perfect example of how Chronic Pain patients are treated. That doctor has no idea if he was in pain.I am in pain 24/7 and some days I can walk, others I’m in bed. You can judge what he did all day but don’t you dare try to diminish his pain by seeing a 30 sec clip.Until you have lived through it you should not speak on it.

I am at MY WITS END. i have been trying to get help for close to 20 years. I am on my last nerve with it. I don't know what to do anymore. The gaslighting from the medical field has me almost insane.

Back and/, or neck pain can be pure hell. I had a back injury where my back locks up. You basically can't move at all, and it still takes your breathe away. It has only popped up several times.
I can't imagine the pain and discomfort this fellow is going through.
Mine struck me at roughly the same age, when visiting a sister in New York, I bent down to pet this cat while wearing a duffle bag. It hit me the next morning in bed where my back just locked up (I felt fine on the drive back to Delaware).
Anyway, it was the weirdest, most complete pain I've ever encountered, and it is nearly impossible to get into a position to ease it.
Imagine having that kind of discomfort daily. Take special care of your back and neck people.
