Meanwhile I'm watching movies on my phone with a down-firing mono

Despite sounding good, this doesn't prevent neighbours noises from ruining your immersion.

To be completely honest, this might be one of my favorite channels ever...also, I want to set up a more surround sound system

A someone who used built-in speakers everywhere until about a month ago, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to get some good speakers. Even a small 2.0 setup will sound extraordinarily better.

I almost thought you were serious about recommending the built-in speakers.

I work with surround sound for movies, finally an accurate video! The best part about 5.1 and up is the center channel. Having dialogue, foley, and effects all go into one channel frees up space in the rest for atmospheres and music and also helps set a solid backbone for the entire movie or episode. And in a bigger cinema where the left and right speakers are 20 meters apart, the sound is clearly and concisely coming from the center of the picture.

Oh, and Dolby Atmos supports up to 128 full range channels and all mixes are compatible across different Atmos suites of all sizes!

After years of just using built-in TV speakers, I installed a 5.1.4 system. Never knew what I was missing.

During the quarantine, since my parents went no work and just spent time on Netflix, I bought a JBL Bar 5.1 so they can enjoy more on watching. But yet, they usually use the TV speakers and the soundbar only get used when I'm also watching. (screams internally)

Don't forget about one of the most important aspects of a surround sound experience... the physical watching/listening area. Most home designs don't give a damn about your movie watching experience. The placement of a proper TV and surround sound setup is usually less than an afterthought. Take Linus' home TV setup for example. His TV location, relative to all of the walls around it, is far from ideal. It's actually borderline criminal. Choosing where to place your home theater is just as important as choosing which components to include in it.
