If you use cuticle nippers to do your nails at home make sure you watch this short video.
Cuticle nippers are supposed to be used to cut off dead skin. A lot of people are mistaking the proximal nail fold for their cuticle and are trimming it off for an "aesthetic" look.

Cutting your proximal nail fold will let in germs and bacteria which can lead to infections.

Let me know if you use nippers in the comments

I like the Blue Cross cuticle remover. It turns all dead skin white so that you don’t cut live tissue.

This!!!! I get compliments on my cuticles and people are shocked when I tell them I never use clippers. Just soften them with jojoba based nail/cuticle oil, apply some cuticle remover gel, push them back, and ta-da! Healthy, clean, and beautiful cuticles!

Thank I tell people that THE People think I'm not doing a good job but i told them they are using the nippers wrong. It is LIVE tissue!!!! That's how a lot of diabetic patients end up in the hospital and needing amputations!!! Seriously y'all.

You can cut off the proximal fold of the eponychium, if it’s dead skin. The reason it makes her nails all puffy and red and makes you bleed is because you’re cutting too far down and you’re hurting live tissue. If you only cut off the part/the white part you will not be hurting the client/yourself.

Thank you!! This needs to go viral!!
My Nail Instructor taught us to only cut hangnails and any other skin that's already sticking up. She told us to never cut into living skin, just visibly dead, protruding skin. This is why paronychia AKA "runaround" is spreading like wildfire in the NSS shops, too!

It's only puffy and infected because you cut too much. The problem is, that most people can't see where the dead skin ends because it may seem like you cut less than you need.
I have zero problem with redness and puffiness of the cuticle on my clients. As a nail tech I do of course understand that not everybody needs their cuticle to be cut. And I do not cut everybody's cuticles. So girlie, it depends on the technique you're using. U can do this safely!

I think u should rephrase that to “for some of you that don’t know how to clip” your proximal fold or cuticle area . Some do it correctly and don’t get infections. That’s a broad statement and just going to say some of us have been doing nails for decades we know what we’re doing.

Thank you! I’m not a nail technician but I’m a cosmologist and that was a big no no, I keep trying to tell people stop doing that especially the licensed ones you went to school you know better

Too each it's own because it's fine with me. And in my case, it still is dead skin and I still have a fold which is only live skin. People who have irritated skin like that often cut the live skin.

Im starting my nail business and doing my research lately. Im glad i found this. I never liked my cuticles being cut. Every time i get them cut, and they spray, it friggin burns.

Whether or not you need to remove keratinized nail fold is actually pretty individual. It depends on how you do the manicure (wet or dry), how often you do the manicure, whether you moisturize in between manicures, if you push back the nail folds between manicures, and on how sticky your individual cuticle actually is. If you have gone 3 plus weeks, not touched the nail folds, have sticky cuticles and do a dry manicure, you will probably have a nice keratinized line to trim. That is not living tissue. Not everyone wants to do a wet mani like this, it can affect adherence of nail products. In summary, educate yourself and choose what works best for you. And obviously nail folds should not be inflammed after the manicure. If you dont kniw how to safely do a dry mani, this is an option. But the dry mani is more advanced training, its a very cool thing to learn.

I've been cutting my cuticles for 10 years now. I've never seen skin around my nails get red, swollen or infected 😂 once you push off the cuticle the way you do on this vode, it separates from your nailed. There is no point to leave it there. It will only get dry, crusty and might split

We're not cutting the proximal nail fold. We're cutting the keratinized proximal nail fold. There's a difference

EXACTLY... it has taken a couple of months to heal my thumb due to this same topic, Thank You! 😊

You're supposed to rinse off the cuticle remover after about a minute because it can be irritating for your skin. THEN you can gentle scrape the cuticle off

For myself, my proximal nail folds aren't usually dry/crusty/dead, so I normally just do this method exactly as shown in this video. On the rare occasion that the nail fold grows too long or gets too dry, I will use either sharp nippers/nail scissors or a fine ball diamond bit on the dead skin (only) on the proximal nail folds. If I don't remove the dry nail fold at that time, they will get caught and snagged on things and I'll get small cuts around my cuticles 😢 So for me, it's best to take care of it before it gets worse.
