When I was a kid all our clothes were handwashed. That meant spending a ton of time in water, and in that time the cuticle gets really really soft and just sloughs off. It also turns whiter so you can see it better. That's how I learned what the cuticle is and I learned to soak my hands and feet before I could ever get cuticle removers.

Thank you so much for a detailed explanation of what is going on between the nail plate and the proximal nail fold. After following your tips studiously for the past year or so and seeing so much improvement, I got creative and started cleaning out in between the PNF and the nail plate and I was shocked at how much "stuff" came out. (Not gunna lie, it was pretty satisfying. ) I thought it was all dead cuticle tissue, now I know I was disrupting those stem cells. My proximal nail folds didn't change too much but I could tell the seal between the PNF and the nail plate was broken. I don't think I've done too much damage but I'm not going to be doing that anymore at all, and just really babying my nails again.
