Sorry this message is a little late. O'ahu resident born and raised. This whole thing has been really concerning/frustrating for most people over here, especially when you would see military officials on the news downplaying the situation. I don't know anyone on the ground who were in favor of leaving the fuel tanks in place. This includes military personnel and their families who were temporarily displaced while the navy flushed out their water system.

The current news is that the tanks will be drained and decommissioned. The navy tried to fight it, but it was overruled. Like you said in your video, this kind of thing is not new to hawaii or its people. Pu'uloa, Kaho'olawe, and Makua valley are just a few names that come to mind when thinking of the US military desecration of hawaiian land. This situation with red hill is a big win for native hawaiians, the Sierra club, the board of water supply and many others who were actively pushing for the tanks to be permanently shut down. Honestly didn't think it would happen.

Government contracts have been executed for the past 50 years abating the legacy fuel storage on military sites in Hawaii. Additionally, these contract document soil contamination testing for the same period. I believe these contracts are on-going today. I hope you can obtain these records utilizing FOIA requests.
