It broke my heart to hear the weeping. I can’t imagine losing my loved ones this way, or even the pets that I love.

I ’m Japanese and my husband lived by the city in this video.
He was in elementary school at the time.He still says he can't see the video from this time. I myself experienced that earthquake, and I scream every time the earthquake early warning system goes off. We will never forget this memory for the rest of our lives.

The 3rd clip at 3:30 is the one that always sticks in my mind. You can see an old couple not able to escape in time, clinging to the side of their house, and then a short time later the entire house is destroyed. So sad, especially considering how many other elderly people probably got stuck in the same situation.

私は、この地震と津波で、親友5人と家族を亡くした。
自然の力を前に、人はただ立ち尽くす。
私は、この災害を絶対に忘れない。

Years after this disaster, I watch these videos and weep for the lives lost and for the families that grieve.

The sheer force of that water is mind boggling. There was more than one surge wave that hit shore. Entire towns were wiped out. People who didn't get out of the way in time were lost. A few people who got caught in water managed to climb to safety when debris lodged onto a building. Some were swept away in their cars. Terrifying.

To me, this was one of the saddest, tragic and most cruel episodes of nature against mankind of our times. I admire the bravery of the Japanese people for being capable of withstanding and recovering from this terrible event. My most sincere condolences for people that up to this day grieves their loved ones.

11:20 I can think of nothing more terrifying than being caught in this building and unable to escape. To wait and wonder if the building will suddenly collapse and you will be pulled into that icy water.

3:24 whoever recorded this deserves an award I’ve been watching tsunami videos for years now and this is one of the first where we can really see it from the stand point of someone on the ground looking up. So metal

I have seen a lot of this footage but i still marvel at the first part. Kudos to whoever built that building. Enormous pressure and weight hitting that and it still held strong even with the water going through it. Amazing. RIP to all the people and animals who lost their life to this Tragedy!

All these years later, it still hurts to watch these clips. So many people's lives changed, so fast.

I have seen a lot of tsunami videos from the East Japan Tsunami but many of the clips in this compilation are absolutely new to me.

Thank You very much for taking the time and effort to make this compilation.

Very much appreciated.

Watching this video makes me fully appreciative of the fact that I live in one of the safest countries on earth... Ireland. No earthquakes or tsunamis, no active or dormant volcanos, no hurricanes (just the occasional bad storm), no tornados, very little lightening, no poisonous snakes, no dangerous spiders, no bears, no wolves, no hippos, no lions or hyenas, not too hot in summer, never too cold in winter... yes, I truly thank God that I live on the island of Ireland.... and pray for those who live with the hazards that we are totally free of.

I never understood how so many people died before, but seeing this has really made it clear. You think your building is strong but the ocean can knock it over with cars or another building like it is playing dominos. So sad for all the families who lost loved ones.

After all these years, and watching these videos I can't help but imagine what these poor souls experienced then. My heart still grieves and rejoices at the same time, especially for those who were caught atop buildings, watching helplessly and fearfully as another building was swept away past them

Crazy watching everything swept away, cars, houses, powerlines... Like toys in a bathtub swirling around the drain.
Tsunamis are no joke!

51:12 it took around 20 seconds to flood the entire area...this is insane!

Seeing your home and life being swept away in front of your eyes and just being able to stand there and watch, is something I don't want to experience and don't want anybody to experience...

A lot of people are asking why they didn't evacuate: The time between the earthquake and the tsunami reaching the shore was 30 minutes. Many places only had 10 minutes of warning. 60% of deaths were elderly: They literally couldn't run fast enough.

I love Japan and their culture and it devastated me when this happened to their beautiful country. It was shocking.
