Witness some of the scariest, most horrifying, and dramatic footage of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit the region of Tohoku, Japan. Taken together, the March 2011 Japanese tsunami and earthquake was one of the most horrific natural disasters - and the costliest natural disaster so far - in human history. In Japan, the tsunami, earthquake and their effects are often referred to as 3-11-2011, 3-11, or March 11. This video features two angles of scary earthquake footage and three angles of scary tsunami footage from the March 11 2011 disaster, including swaying buildings in Tokyo, tsunami impact in Kesennuma, Japanese Coast Guard footage of the tsunami at sea, and tsunami landfall in Oirase.

What you're seeing with high rise buildings gently swaying like palm trees during a mag 9.1 quake is nothing short of a marvel of Japanese structural engineering 👌🏻 Good video btw.

Truely a natural disaster of gigantic proportions. 😔

Regulations matter. Japanese buildings withstand a 9.1 (The tsunami did the damage to Japan, not the quake)

One thing to note is the EQ had two stages to it. The initial shake was rather pronounced but it began to taper off after a minute or two, but it was not stopping. It was, instead, putting in the clutch and going for the next gear. This second stage was, by far, more violent than the first. the entire quake lasted just under six minutes.

Japan was / is the best-equipped nation and culture in the world to cope with a disaster like this...its warning systems, the awareness and experience of the population, and its high standard of construction and protections...but even with all that, 20, 000 people were still killed.

I have watched dozens of these videos and the one thing that astounds me the most is the force it took to displace so much water all at once over such a wide area. Just unbelievable!

The buildings are supposed to sway. That's not to say it wasn't the most powerful earthquake or anything. It's to say that building tech is incredible and those building did what they're supposed to do.

This scares me to death… I live in a small coastal community along the NE coast of MA… I could only imagine this happening in dead of winter when the ocean is 33F and the air is 25F….
