Should you keep your expired COVID tests?

The U.S. government announced last month it would ship out more free COVID-19 tests, a batch that appears to have a short shelf life. However, the Food and Drug Administration said it has extended the expiration dates for them. Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, joins "CBS News Weekender" to discuss if the tests are still accurate and how to tell if they work.

I just had two tests at the same time. One test kit was recently expired this past April, the other test expired well over two years ago. They both lit up positive immediately. Crap.

I had Covid in July 24 and the doctor I saw said not to throw out expired test kits. She said it because I had old tests that I threw away several years ago. I won't throw them out now.

They still work. I just had Covid for the first time. The test I bought at the drugstore drive through window has expired, as have the free ones I received from the government a few days later. Still work.

In my case. two senior adults live at the same address--myself and my brother's widow. It is her house and she always orders tests then tells me about how a new round of tests are available. Since she has ordered hers I am told no more can be sent to our address. She gets tests. I don't.

So the problem with expired tests is false negatives.

We used expires C tests and they were correct. Went to the store and bought some and was tested in a the hospital.

I used expired kits, two days in a row, they all came out negative, but I was having coughing. So I bought a test kit from Kaiser, the result came up positive, crap, expired test kits are not useable!! Now is October, why government sent kits that expired in January 2024?

But at least they’re making use of them. lol! 🤷‍♀️😂 I have some expired tests and I’m sure they still work just fine. It’s just that the variants are so different from the original inception Covid that these first tests were based on. That’s my concern. And that would also apply to these 2 months to expiration tests. They need to update the tests to reflect the newer variants I feel. 🤔 Especially this recombinant variant.

There goes our government my newly delivered test expires in Dec 2023 and will be extended to Dec 2024. They must have had a lot of extra tests laying around. This is B/S

I save all mu Kovid tests, both the used and unused tests . the used ones are in one box and labeled with the date, time and results including the used nasal swabs. the unused ones are in a separate box, even the expired ones along with the receipts documenting when and where I purchased them. I also have every cloth and n-95 mask I have ever purchased, again separated in two boxes, one for used and another for unused . I have notes for every used mask, including where and when worn and for how long and under what conditions . I have had every covid shot available including all boosters and complete documentation of my reaction to them. I have also had every available vaccination for other diseases and am 1000% in favor of vaccinations. All of tis info is stored in a spare room that I call the MAGA office . Yes I am a Trump supporter and will vote for him a third time and have donated my 401 (k) withdrawal to his campaign instead of wasting it on a local food bank

never had any tests...think i left the house maybe 20 times over those years, mainly for medical stuff, and minimal contact with few people for minor amounts of time plus a strong immune system made me feel ok and i got through fine, never got covid, not much even changed for me.
kinda odd waking up every day and to everyone else the worlds on fire and I'm sitting there like: this is fine.
