I never follow the expiration date😅. But if the makeup product consistency changes then I know it’s time for it to go.

The rare beauty blushes will last everyone like 10 years because it doesn’t take much. They need to make smaller bottles and charge less so it won’t expire on all of us before we can use it up.

Goss makeup artist used to say to not follow the packaging exactly. Companies underestimate the expiry date to cover themselves in case someone has a bad reaction and sues. So he said to double the time the packaging says. So instead of 12 months, you can use it for 2 years if not a little bit more.

I had an eyeshadow palette once that was over 25 years old. And yes I had been using it the whole time. And no, I didn’t go blind. I think it might have actually been over 30 years old. I think I bought it before 1983 and didn’t throw it out until the twenty teens!🤣 Now that I think about it, it could have been “expired” before I even bought it. Got it on clearance. No one thought about makeup expiring back then. It was that shade of blue that was popular in the late 70’s. Wow!

I be using my makeup that's like 5 years old. I don't get how companies just expect us to throw it away after 6-12 months. Scam to buy more maybe? I throw it away if it smells or consistency changes

Dry powder will have an expiration date as well, but as long as there is no moisture, it is not expired. If you have used it properly and kept it clean and dry, you can keep it forever. They just have to include the exp. date cuz that's the rules 😜

Most people don’t follow expiration dates just because makeup is pricey and in some cases hard to use before the date. There is definitely risks if you are using make up after the expiration date like changes in texture or change in composition allergic reactions etc but the main risk is bacteria. To reduce these risks you can store your makeup in a cool dark and dry place, never put it directly in contact with skin or unclean ustensiles / ustensiles that come into contact with skin and then the makeup, and remind yourself than the more oily/watery the product is the more it is prone to culturing bacteria’s and creating diseases. To extend the life and safety of your makeup you can take a small amount of product out with a clean ustensile and putting it onto a clean palette or plate for example and never using the brush touching your face in the make up contenant directly. You can also look out for changes in textures, grainy texture appearing in powder products (it’s bacteria) and in the cases of liquid products mascara etc it’s more important to change it regularly than it is for a makeup palette especially if you don’t put your fingers or brushes you use directly on your face in it. It’s not full proof but it makes it safer to avoid bacteria growth. Hope it helps !

A young lady mentioned below, and I agree, sometimes it's better to buy travel sizes if you're worried about the expiry dates. Smart lass.

I didn’t spend all that money just to follow an expiration date, its still good in my opinion. I have two or more eyeshadow palettes from years ago and still looks and smells brand new. 🤭

⚠️GUYS ITS NOT THE EXPIRATION DATE⚠️

I can confirm the little m next to the number stands for MILLILITERS, that’s why some smaller products have a shorter “expiration date” but no it’s just the size of the product. 😂

Hope this cleared things up for some of you guys 💕

Those labels are a nice guide, but don’t go throwing out perfectly good makeup because the little jar on the label told you to. You can tell makeup is expired if the scent, texture, or application changes. And I’ve had some powder products for years that work just as well now as they did then. Remember, those jar numbers are extremely conservative. It’s not as if 12 months go by and the product just magically becomes toxic.

Yes, due to bacteria. The companies kinda have to protect themselves against lawsuits (especially in the U.S). But, if you are very mindful about make-up hygiene in generel, those 6-12-24 months are absolutely just a guideline. Always check smell and consistency and you will find that most products are definitly still good even after 1 year. I have lipsticks that are more than 3 years old and still works beautifully.

If it changes consistently, color or smells funny it’s gone bad. But if not it’s still usable to me 😂. My grandmother had the same Sunday lipstick for her whole life 😂

Y'all: PLEASE pay attention to expiration dates on makeup. Especially liquid products and eyeliner or mascara. Always look out for weird changes in smell, texture, or performance. If possible, make sure to sanitize your products too!!

IMPORTANT!!!
Im an artist, and I've found out trat mixing makeup (works even better with liquid makeup) with cooking oil can be used as paint! I like to use it to train my painting skills, it's better than expending more money with oil paintings when I'm still a noobie at it, or than just throwing it away.
Give it to someone who can make art with it! Pls!
