This video is excellent.

It is so hard to learn tonal languages for westerners. Breaking it down and comparing tones to colloquial English expressions is inspired.

Thanks!

I’ve been struggling with this for a while! It was a really good idea to compare it to english words - “what” for 2nd tone, “well” for 3rd tone, and “stop” for 4th tone. I had heard of questions=rising tone, but this was the first I’ve heard of the tricks for the others!

The way you explain the tones in the 1-5 range is so extremely helpful, just these two videos helped me so much already

I just never got the answer on one thing about tonal languages, like mandarin.
If it's so dependent on tones for the meaning of words, how do they manage it in songs? Do they have to pick words whose tones will fit the melody of the song, or tones are just ignored and you have to be supposing which is the word intended?

I have seen many videos insisting that the tones are really easy - if they were easy - we (foreigners) wouldnt find them so difficult and keep making mistakes !!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP !! Much appreciated. This is one of the best "chinese tone" videos around.

I’m a complete beginner in Mandarin. The reason I want to learn is because I’m part Chinese but I did not grow up in China. I think it’s a beautiful language. This is really helpful! Thanks

I just transferred to a Chinese-Buddhist school and one of the subjects we need to study is Chinese Mandarin, I’ve been having a hard time pronouncing Chinese words because of their puzzling tones. Now I’m practicing through YT tutorials, and this is very helpful.
谢谢,老师!

I'm a beginner in korean, so maybe that's why this was sugested to me. I watched it out of curiosity and although chinese is such an intimidating language, your way of explaining is so easy to understand. You have a gift. Maybe I'll give chinese a try in a few years because I really want to learn as many languages as I can, but I like taking things slow. As a native spanish speaker, it has always fascinated me the complexity of the chinese language. Loved the video!
