Hurricane Helene death toll rises to 182

The death toll from Hurricane Helene has reached at least 182 people as of Wednesday, according to The Associated Press. Recovery efforts are ongoing across the Southeast.

I'm in Chesnee, SC. We've been without power since last Friday and expect it to be several more days before restoration. We were not prepared by anyone for this amount of devastation. I think i speak for a lot of in saying we are still in a state of shock and survival. The first several days after the storm were a daily struggle to acquire basic needs. That is getting easier with each day, but we are being told replenishing cold items and fuel once reserves are sold may take a while. We are still better off than thousands, like my pregnant cousin in Boone, NC, and other areas who are trapped and running out of water, medicines, etc. Each day, I leave for work, and by that evening, i see progress. It may be slow going, but the damage is still hard to process. Every day, I see more and more people from other states and even Canada flooding our streets to help clear debris and restore power. Every day, I hear stories on the radio of people who are creating volunteer groups and gathering supplies. I just want to say THANK YOU. I see you, and i appreciate you. For the first time in a long time, we are seeing each other. We are loving our neighbors as ourselves. I will never forget this devastating experience. I will also always remember what we are capable of when we love each other and work together.

Hi, regarding the death toll, i lived through Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. I know of at least two immediately post hurricane suicides in the town. Those are just those that i know of.

I heard that a woman from Volney, Virginia killed herself after her home was washed away down a river. 

I recommend self-care for everyone, including us who are witnessing events like these. We are all traumatized and are continuing being retraumatized by our inherent death anxiety.

My Dad lives out there. He is ok, just no power (has generator).
He is volunteering at a FEMA distribution center.

In the long term….centuries and millennia….nature always wins it seems.
