❤ In Jamaica we had a designated table in the backyard to wash them. It's a nice open yard, we'd be back there doing dishes and talking to neighbors and I keep an eye on my little brother. Meanwhile we have a whole kitchen. I never understood this growing up bc I mostly grew up in America. But now it's 1 of my most appreciated nostalgia.

This is my worst nightmare. I'm such a slow washer, it'd take me half the day. Idk how my mum made so many side dishes growing up. When I started cooking, I cut that sh*t down right away 😂 sometimes I use the plate or bowl I'm planning to eat from as a cutting board.

Here in West Africa my neighbors do the same. We have an indoor sink but no running water during the day so I either bring the water in buckets or do the dishes outside at a tank that fills each night.

After hand washing dishes for more than 30 years, I went to live in another country and started using a dishwasher. Never looked back :)

Same in Sri Lanka, especially in villages.
A lot of Sri Lankan houses have two kitchens - one inside the main house and another one disconnected from the main house where all the big cooking happens (for parties and stuff).

My grandma rarely used the inside kitchen, even on normal days, she loved using the outside kitchen and cooking on a firewood stove.

She even washed dishes outside, like in the video, when we have perfectly good sinks inside both kitchens. And she used coconut husks instead of sponges to scrub big pots

This reminds me of when I was a weee bit child, maybe 5? I spending time with my grandma. All I remember was that I was sitting in the living room with a wash bin and chopsticks... She showed me how to wash the chopsticks properly. My grandparents did have a kitchen, but I think my grandma must have brought out the wash bin to show me how to wash chopsticks. She passed away when I was 10. I miss my grandma. She was the most gentle and kind person.
