When you combined all the sponges, it took up the space of one, meaning it was super dense, then you absorbed all the filth and grime with the sponge, but here's the thing, as you were absorbing more and more, it was getting more and more dense, and eventually it likely gained a gravitational pull strong enough to pull in the plate, once it did that, it only got more and more dense, basically a mini black hole. I could see a cool game based off this idea, almost like donut county
