History wasn't "changed". Unqualified Europeans chanced on structures without a Southern African equivalent and used their own parameters and assumptions that initially misinterpreted them in favour of external origin. The first scientific archaeological excavations at the site were only undertaken by David Randall-MacIver in 1905–1906. He concluded that all available evidence led him to believe that the Zimbabwe structures were constructed by the ancestors of the Shona people. That has been the professional archaeological consensus ever since. This was certainly the thrust of Rhodesian tourist advertising under UDI and, knowing this, UDI Rhodesia put Zimbabwe birds on all its national heraldry, from the flag, to coins, notes, stamps, military badges, etc., etc..
