So Sweden can go from a neutral nation, in charge of its own military free to choose its own weapons systems and free to stay out of conflict - to a subjugated nation under American control, with limited options for buying weapons of defence and being a nuclear target.

Sweden do your citizens a favour and do not give up your military choices your sovereignty or your options, stay out of NATO.

Isn't a guarantee of independence actually a great work around to Sweden and Finland not joining NATO? Russia gets what it wants as the pair now essentially have NATO article 5 backing them without being in NATO or coordinating with NATO military forces, meanwhile Sweden and Finland get the piece of mind that if Russia attacks them NATO will hop in. No one joins NATO, and no one is left worrying about being left alone if a big bothersome state starts acting rogue.
