I decided to build a Desktop PC as the laptops are getting old. I thought I would save some money and still get a very fast machine.

I've been in IT since 1989. Use to build computers for the family and myself all the time. Not anymore. Burned out. :)

I've built two versions of my "Green Monster" gaming machine, one about four years ago, and the one I'm working on now was built in December 2014. It would cost me about $400 less to build the same machine now, with a couple of upgraded components since the originals aren't compatible with the new version of the motherboard. It's an "Enthusiast-level" rig, at least comparing it to the price levels on pcpartpicker. I've gone with different components than most people use, but that's the beauty of building my own machine. The older version was what I consider second-tier, but this one was top shelf when I built it, and I've since added a second video card in SLI. It chews up every game I throw at it, and is "Stable as a table."

I have built most of my own computers for the past 8 years, and my HTPC computer cost me $700 and runs three hard drives (one is a 4TB to store my movies and music). My one other computer is a totally "hacked up" Dell that was "altered slightly" in a custom case using spare parts to fix my lady friends computer!!! I love my desktops as you said there is a ton of room in them, and you can run multiple hard drives in them as well! My main rig is a custom built I made six years ago, and it runs five 2tb hard drives and a 500GB hard drive for the OS only!!! I will never go back to anything "store bought" ever again!!

Little tip from someone that builds pc's. it's easy to do and will save you money. But for a beginner with no knowledge that doesn't want to learn it all I advise you to buy a from a company. Here in the UK you can get a pc built for you for nearly the same amount as buying all the bits and doing it yourself. The plus is you get a warranty. Not trying to detract from the sentiment of your video I agree fully. But don't fuck it up if your are clueless.

Be sure and do backups.. My three year old Samsung SSD failed and had to be replaced.. Replaced it with a SanDisk SSD...

That's a great setup indeed. Lack of ESD in building computers can be a bad thing though. Some static discharge on some chips could damage the components or give you intermittent faults.

My hubby and I have been building our own PC's for years and we go to Microcenter and Frys for our parts. A heck of a lot more inexpensive. With building your own, you can get a lot more out of it and you know what's in it. And yes, our systems do run MineCrack. LOL!!!

Some of my clients don't seem to get that the part picker doesn't account for alignment and hardware sizes. Other than that it is a pretty fool proof strategy.

Dude! You look 10 years younger!

I'm going to fire up the 15 year old monster, as this 3 year old laptop is terrible. Hello fail free XP SP3!

Neat! Count the hours per week you're at the PC.
It's important to get a setup that fits. You're gonna get no end of PC geeks aroused! ;p

Nice build, But I think you're missing out on the SSD. I would have recommended getting a motherboard with a M.2 PCI-E slot and getting an M.2 NVMe PCI-E SSD card. The M.2 drive is about 4 times faster than that SSD you have. Granted it's a little more expensive but I think it's worth the cost.

I was hoping for a super low energy / efficient computer build adapted for off grid situations. I'ts a very nice rig yer made, no doubt about it, but it will also suck power like a newborn pig on a cold day.
I kinda expected a build around one of the micro ITX boards and mobile processors. :-)

Build your own. Don't get swamped building for others. Off the shelf units the Power supply only has enough for that build add anything New Power Supply. Building it yourself always better.

Should have gotten the 1060 instead of the 1050 :)

I've built more than a few computers over the years and it does pay to invest in a good case...they haven't changed the ATX format in over 30 years and you can just keep recycling the same case over and over. That being said, I'm also a big fan of a full sized ATX MB...you get the maximum flexibility if any of your onboard built-ins fail. Not too mention the vast array of add on cards. If you're going to use an ITX or mATX MB you might as well make use of a vastly smaller case. My other point is Graphics cards vs Onboard graphics. Not only can you save some money, but take a look at the power consumption of a separate graphics card. Clearly, if you don't need the extra power, selecting a MB with good onboard graphics is a great way to go. In my case, I no longer play games so it's a no brainer...even when I did, I made due with the built in chip most of the time. Cool build, though...thanks for sharing!

I haven't been able to download sketchup 32 bit & it's frustrating me until no end. I'm assuming you have 64 bit quadcore.

nice, you can solve future problems better than just buying a box
