At least older thinkpads let you swap the cpu, ram, storage, battery and swap out the optical drive with more storage or a second battery. Plus they usually have a spare mini pcie slot inside. They also have expresscard and pcmcia slots for extra ports. You can also upgrade the display and replace most individial parts cheaply.

I have also the feeling the brands has no interest in people start building their own labtops. Because it's a massive business. And then suddenly they lose money. Also considering the market for labtops has explored.
