In this video, Dr. Berg talks about why a person can't sleep while doing the ketogenic diet. This is usually because of low calcium. But it could also be other minerals - magnesium or even potassium. Take calcium and magnesium together.

Potassium deficiency can also affect sleep but this is mainly due to low amounts of vegetables. Your sleep issue could also be a vitamin B1 deficiency. And the last thing could be consuming too much protein as protein is a stimulant.

Have been on keto for 5 months, doing all these things, taking supplements - you name it. Nothing helps. Loved being on keto until it messed up my sleep. Unfortunately, switching to low carb and will eat healthy carbs. Sorry, but sleep is important.

My problem hasn't been insomnia - I could fall asleep just fine, but I could not stay asleep and would keep waking up until early in the morning, when I would just stay awake and not be able to relax again. Recently I've been taking nutritional yeast, and I've been noticing how much more deeply I'm sleeping and how great I feel during the day. I like it!

Trust me, insomnia will go away. Just stay with it. I went through Keto flu -- it lasted about a day. Then I went through the lethargy - just dragging around. That last a few days. Then one morning I woke up with energy that powered me through the day and then some. For the first time in my life, I WANTED to exercise -- and now I had the energy to do it! I couldn't sleep more than 6 hours -- I had so much energy. That has subsided, but the energy is still there. I am sleeping about 8 hours a night now, so it's all good. Just power through these "adjustments." Fueling with Ketones is SO MUCH better than fueling with glucose. God bless all of you on the Keto journey.

I experienced insomnia when I did Keto. Really bad. Now I realize it was from not eating enough vegetables! I was eating mostly fats and protein. I also experienced extreme hair loss which led me to stop Ketoing for awhile. (It did grow back) But I’m back on bc I felt my absolute best when I did Keto. Thank you so much Dr. Berg. You are one of the best sources of EXPERT Keto information.

Calcium is what I have not tried yet.
It's been brutal lately.
Up ALL night, then able to close my eyes between 5am & dawn. It's so old!
Been keto almost 17 Weeks.

I feel the same way as i did when i was a kid and i couldnt sleep on christmas eve.... like the energy in my body from excitement.. except i got nothing 2 b excited about

I had problems with insomnia before trying keto. Keto made it worse, but the interesting thing is that even after a sleepless night, I can still focus easily while on ketones. I experimented with having enough carbs during the day, 100 - 150g carbs, and sleep got better. Maybe it would be a good idea, for us who cant sleep very well and dont have problems with weight, but want the benefits of low carb diet, to add 2 tablespoons of white rice to every keto meal we have, since Dr Berg said that carbs from the keto vegetables should not be counted! So we would not technically be in ketosis, but we wouldn't either spike insulin too much. Plus we could do intermittent fasting occasionally and longer fasts rarely!

In the beginning of the keto i used to sleep like a baby 8-9 hours, now after 2 months of keto i wake up 4:00am and can not sleep again :(

What about resistant starch for sleep on keto. It has helped me more then any supplement.
