A big welcome into my life! I am a Dan from the UK and I have #Aspergers Syndrome or #ASD which is a form of Autism, often referred to as High Functioning Autism or #Autism Spectrum Disorder. I make videos every week on my journey and offer tips and tricks to help everyone who has Autism.

I also have help videos for helping people get a diagnosis of Autism or Aspergers Syndrome, and also some advise and help for anyone who is friends, partners or loved ones who suffer from Autism or Aspergers Syndrome and just about anyone on the Autism Spectrum.

Eye contact was a big issue for me. Teachers & tutors went whenever I didn’t look into their eyes! And yeah I don’t play the same way as my ‘friends’ play. They bullied me so much because of it. Nice video dan.

Something I didn't realise was that you don't need all the symptoms to get a diagnosis, and also a lot of them (like eye contact) are a question of degree. My daughter gives lots of eye contact and is very chatty with people she knows well, but has much less engagement with assessors than they think is typical, and plays less with her peers (but she does play with them, it's just a question of degree). As a parent this makes it harder to spot, but also makes clear we are talking about difference more than disability. It's only a disability because the world is set up for typical people! It's a big and complex thing to try to get your head around as a parent (especially when you then start to spot traits in yourself!!)

The bonus one was good! I had one adorable sack of potatoes child, and one marmoset child. Both went off to uni; the marmoset messages me several times a day, and the adorable potato gets weekly texts saying "Are you alive!??!!" 😄

I have ASD, , SPD [Sensory Processing disorder (a common trait of autism )] and dyspraxia (a motor skills and communication disorder). I showed nearly all of the traits in this video when i was younger (apart from the hand gestures one), along with some others e.g. obsessive interests, Maths in my case, and extremely high abilities in one or more areas balanced out with extremely low abilities on other areas. I never thought that these traits where common with other people, and I am glad to know that I am not the only one facing these issues.

Made mom watch this... She said, "the only thing you ever pointed to as a kid was Freaking McDonald's, and then when we'd go in You wouldnt say what u wanted just nod your head when you heard the item. Here i thought all those symptoms were normal😂"

The eye contact isn't a problem for everyone. Especially in Aspergers

Glad to be watching this as a mother on the spectrum, I want my children to have all the resources they need if necessary, so their childhood can be better than mine. Thank you Dan!

Very important information to know - the earlier the diagnosis the more success a child has.

It’s crazy how many different sign and symptoms there are in aspergers and I suppose this is why in can take a while to get the diagnosis and often a misdiagnosis... great video dan xx

I tried for years to get my son diagnosed with just anything. I just wanted to know why he wasn't talking and had certain behaviors. It took until he was 7 to finally get diagnosed correctly. It was ridiculous. I'm lucky in the fact that my son does make eye contact, is extremely affectionate, and always listens to me. He is just the best person in the world.

When I was in elementary school. I played tag with kids. But I always played it with my Twin brothers friends. My brother has ADHD and Dyslexia. Assuming that I would have something like that too. Anyway, through kindergarten all the way to 4th grade I played tag and other games with him and is guy friends. I got bored each time I played them. I started to realize people were getting into fights, then I would go play by myself or something. Then.. my brother had to go to some different school from me. One for people with learning it differences. I was kind of mad at the time because he and his friends were the people I played with. I made “friends” through the other grades. One of them moved and I started to hang out with the other people less. 4th grade, I made a friend.. I ended trying to play with her and her friends at recess but they were always REALLY BORING. It’s all the girl stuff you know? Most of the time they just sat down and talked. We tried to play tag and hide n seek a few times. Again, more fights. It was annoying to me. I tried to play with the guys this football catching game since I considered my self a tomboy. Got bored of that too. So during the 5th grade I would kind of be near my friends but also be by myself because no one actually played anything interesting in my opinion. I don’t know, this is kind of how I “played” with kids.

I’m confused.. I asked my mom if I could get diagnosed for Haveing ASD or Aspergers. She is a radiologist, a type of doctor that reads x-rays. She said I would get diagnosed when I was younger. I asked her again but she said no. I tried to figure out if I actually had ASD. I mean I’ve watched videos, I relate to them, I basically spent the whole day researching about it. Since I have a girl I’ve realized that girls get diagnosed later. Which is a bad thing because they are probably living their life confused as to why they don’t do certain things or why do other things. I’ve watched videos and took quizzes online. I still think I have ASD. How do I get my mom to bring me to the doctor? I would not bother her again but I really want to know if I have it.

Does hitting your head from frustration of learning to speak count? I did have an occupational therapist who calmed me down by rubbingg arm with these purple rough a textured gloves. I still have them, but they don't work like they did for me as a child. I also had speech therapy.

I don't really know if I check marked for any of the other ones but I remember not really wanting to play the same way other children played in Elementary (I wanted to do more of a cooking/kitchen thing, which was kind of weird, I remember being all like 'This is a stove' after I dug a hole in the mulch ground outside on the playground, and I always wanted to swing on the swing set and I still do. I didn't really have much of a desire to play hide and go seek, or tag and I loved playing Barbies and reading books, I also don't really respond to my name the same way other people do, while they often respond to the whole name I still think I only really respond to the 'Ri' part of my name.) And I know it's kind of off topic but I remember a friend I saw after class ask me if I was deaf or something because I didn't make eye contact, I asked her 'What?' which didn't help much. Lol.

I didn’t know I had Asperger’s until 36 years old. I remember my classmates asking me why I talked to their forehead or their ears. I still struggle with eye contact.

I'm autistic and still to this day I struggle with speaking and making eye contact with even those I'm closest to. I spent the other day with my dad and I noticed so much that I was struggling with talking about anything, often responding with something like "ahh yeah" when he was showing me around the music that inspired him as a kid in HMV, and I found it hard to even look at him, I mean it had been two years nearly since I last saw him but I couldn't bring myself to look at him so much

This is really male symptom based. Female socialized autistic folks often speak early and excessively, and will attempt interpersonal play but it'll be more parasocial than anything.
