Hubble Space Telescope Captures New Images After Upgrade

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has taken its first new images after switching to a new operating mode using a single gyroscope. The telescope was offline for several weeks due to a gyroscope issue and resumed operations on June 14. This new image features NGC 1546, a nearby galaxy in the constellation Dorado. Viewed from a slightly elevated angle, we can see the dust lanes illuminated by the galaxy’s core light. The core emits a yellow glow, indicating the presence of older stars, while blue star-forming regions shine through the dust.

This image was captured by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 and is part of a joint observing program between Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope. The program also utilizes data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, providing a detailed multiwavelength view of star formation and evolution. This marks Hubble’s first observation in the new pointing mode, demonstrating the success of this new approach. NASA expects Hubble to conduct most of its scientific observations in this mode, continuing its groundbreaking research of the cosmos. Since its launch in 1990, Hubble has been observing the universe for over thirty years and recently celebrated its 34th anniversary.
