Apple hasn't really done much with the iPad lineup in the last few years. Sure, we got Sidecar, but it's essentially still just a big... iPhone. However, with the addition of the M1 chip, Apple might be planning a huge overhaul for the way we use iPads, and we could start seeing the transition in the next few months. So what is Apple's secret plan for the new 2021 iPad Pro with M1 Apple Silicon? Watch to find out.

That’s the best MacBook iPad ecosystem explanation I’ve ever heard

Man, in my opinion, you are by far the best and most objective Mac & iPad Youtuber in reading Apple's strategy. I have had the same opinion for quite some time (actually 2 years ago when I took on iPad Pro 2018) and I began noticing you after the M1 Mac was released. I notice that you are not a big production but you really do a marvelous job narrating with easy words and most of all the insights you deliver into Mac & iPad is by far the best. If I dare to compare, Renee provides the best information (the only weak point if there is one is that he's too entrenched in the Mac ecosystem in my opinion), Max Tech is best in terms of production comparing devices, but you truly deliver the insights. Hope you will hit 1 million subscribers.

iPadOS will stay iPadOS, it’s a refined touch interface, but all mac apps on the Mac App Store will run on iPadOS too, just like how you can now run all iOS apps on a Mac, the same thing will happen with iPad starting with the upcoming WWDC

All I expect from iPad Pro on M1 is native iPadOS pro apps. If apple is doing sidecar on steroids, well you don't need M1 for that.

I’ve been using my iPad Pro for my main device for years. I mainly use it for sketching and designing and writing, it helps my workflow alot. iPadOS 14.5 works just fine for me. But I just wish it has even more polished software with monitor support. Apple knows what they are doing.

Agreed. MacOS on iPad It’s just not going to happen, but I do believe that given the track record and how powerful it has gotten over the years and if it continues to do so, one cannot help but to think that there’s an inevitable scenario where it will replace part of the Macbook lineup. For this year, it’s even more evident with the whopping jump of the RAM from 6GB to 16GB (one might argue that’s for the jump in storage but still, it’s quite a leap regardless). All eyes are on to WWDC, I am really not expecting FCPX or Logic (maybe a sidecar function like you mentioned) but surely some of the already existing editing apps for the iPad getting big incremental updates.

"Apple doesn't want (their) products to compete with each other." This is untrue. Apple is on record saying that if their products are going to be cannibalized, they want it to be their own products doing it. So while they don't deliberately look to have one product class eclipse another, it's also why you see products from Apple with more cross-over functionality than you would normally see from a company. For example, the iPod no longer exists because the iPhone was better in every way. It's also why Apple is allowing the iPad Pro to basically be a better computer than the MacBook Pro in many ways ... they aren't going to artificially restrict that machine like many companies might. They'll let the two compete on their own merits and let the market dictate which wins.

I'm quite curious of the upcoming iPadOS improvements at WWDC.

I would definitely get an M1 iPad if I could get Resolve working just as well as on my M1 Mac! Thanks for sharing your opinion Liam, always nice to see a new video from you

MacBook and iPad - the perfect tandem! Now I only need to worry more on my wallet. 😊

I genuinely bought my iPad Air 4 just for Sidecar function. I never had interest in iPad cause my job needs keyboard more than touch screen and quality stylus. But after I found out about Sidecar, I bought it like almost instantly.

I think iOS, iPad OS and MacOS will all eventually have the same functionality set and will only be differeniated by their UI scale. Similarly with apps, there will be a iphone "view", iPad "view" and Mac "view" but you'll be able to do all the same things across them all.

I don''t think that they aim on macbook & iPad (2 portables together...) More like iMac/MacMini/MacPro +iPad Pro for the enthousiast/professionals. For example with perfect integration I could see myself editing on main desktop machine then continuing with iPad Pro on the road / using both the same time eliminating the need for a wacom product / presenting final product via cloud directly to customers etc

i think the knife and fork analogy is perfect. as an owner of an ipad pro and a mbp currently they work great together but both have their own strengths and weaknesses also

The future of growth is in emerging markets and services both of which are best done with streamlined device offerings. Apple has every incentive to put Mac OS in some form on the iPad to better capture the recurring revenues over the lifecycle of a device and the iPad is just that much more suited to that due to its mobility and versatility. Plus there’s all the growing revenues from accessories to take advantage of💰 whilst jumping out of the crowded market space of thin and lights.

YES! Thank you! I wish they improve Sidecar just PLEASE. can you imagine like, you sidecar your Apple Silicon Mac and you adjust brightness and sound with by touch with that slide? I want THAT.

What do you mean by "stream"? Does the program run on the Mac or iPad? What I think would be really cool is if the iPad and Mac could share snippets of the same machine state. Otherwise I don't see the reason of giving an M1 to the iPad.

Great video, I have said similar things, especially about sidecar (which will get touch), for a while. Funny enough I just posted a comment on Macrumors about this before watching this video. In addition to what you said, I said that Apple will bring their apps to iPad, which will push competitors like the one you mentioned to bring a touch version of their video editor to the iPad. But they need to do more, Bring full Safari, full everything they can, so that more develpers feel the need to come to iPad.. MacOS will stay non touch only and there will always be more powerful Macs than iPad pro, but iPad will get more functionality
