Ooh, "covert", I didn't know it was so secretive.

Sram Etap makes this an easy change both ways. No wires to mess with. Additionally having the data required before making the change so you can calculate the gear ratios perfectly.

you forget mention Chainring Offset. if you go 1x on you road bike, you'd better make sure Chainring has 2 or 3mm offset. Or you might have some noisy "cross chaining" problem

I love these tips and guides in a sort of secretive, undercover sort of way. 🤫

What about a 10-50 cassette so the bike is not just good for the flats

a lot of people seem to not like 1x drivetrains, I love my 1x drivetrain on my crossbike (also used on the road, with road wheelset). I recently put on a bigger chainring (from 40t to 46t) because I wanted some more top speed (I like my sprints). About steep hills (so having a small enough gear): the answer lies in a big cassette, I have an 11-40. No my cadence isn't always optimal but I'm not a pro, if I ride a bit slower because I like my cadence better, so be it. (I'm 19 years old so don't you dare say i'm not competitive in my mind, but when you're just riding around I don't need to be the fastest, I want to have fun)

Using a track crank will correct the chainline to the center of the cassette. Less grinding up the hill.

1x is so easy and almost mindless in terms of picking the ratio. I have 52 in the front and 11 speed 11-42 rear cassette, which easily covers the range of a standard 2x setup. I'm not going to say it's lighter, because the cassette is heavy. the middle ratios i'm riding the most of time make for the straight chain. i hate the faff with 2x. my background is track and im not that fussy with the cadence either. having sram shifters, dropping 2 gears is not a problem. clutched rear derailleur help me jump kerbs. no drawbacks. if i want to go in the mountains, I'm putting 46 chainring and i'm flying :D

make sure your bike has a chain stay long enough for 1x drive trains so that you dont have chain crossing emulating

The most important topic - axial position of the sprocket (or the chainline) was not captured. Thats really unfortunate.

Sorry what did Ollie do to that chain stay? Paint chips cost watts.

What happens with mechanical brifter if you remove the cable for the front mech and possibly the rear brake cable (rear brake also useless)

Remove the shifter cables. Done. Single speed.

Are three ring front chain rings still a common thing in modern bikes? Thanks for the video!

Only makes sense when you need a very specific setup (flat/TT) or go with a larger cassette for a wider gear ratio. However, the video definitely makes sense because even full-fledged TT bikes come with 2x setups (hey, Shimano and SRAM also want to sell their expensive parts), but if you really don't need it, why would you keep an unused derailleur on the bike? 😁

For anyone doing this, absolute black have a PERFECT chainring for the job! Narrow Wide teeth and oval. I was riding 1x10 for a year before my accident - favourite setup.
