Multivitamin Research: Should You Be Taking Them?- Thomas DeLauer… I'm hoping that with this video I can save you some serious money and I know that sounds funny, but I'm talking about your multivitamins. I'm talking about potentially ditching your multivitamins, if you're not someone that actually needs it. This video came to light simply because a lot of people that have talked to and a lot of people that I've worked with, have had a very, very hard time letting go of their multivitamins.

They take these multivitamins and they see them as their crutch. They see them as the end all be all and their link to healthy eating or the void fill from the nutrients that they're missing from their food. But the reality is there's a lot more to just popping a multivitamin and getting your vitamins and minerals in. So first off what I want to look at is the fact that 50% of Americans take a multivitamin.

That is a lot, a lot of people that are misled. A lot of people are leading themselves to believe that they're getting all their vitamins and minerals and getting what they need from a simple pill. Also in reality, we have to look at how much money is being spent. We're talking like $11 billion dollars that people are spending on multivitamins. That's a lot of money.

Okay, so let's talk about what is happening with a multivitamin and why it may not be the best thing for you. I'm not discounting it. I'm not saying that everyone should avoid taking a multivitamin. There are some subcategories of people that might want to take them, but I want to talk about some reality when it comes down to just popping that pill.

First thing I want to look at is too many nutrients, okay? The simple thing is we have to look at this. If our bodies have the ability to take in all these minerals and all of these vitamins at once, don't you think there would be a food out there that truly encompasses all of them?

You see, normally we have to eat different subcategories of foods to ultimately make up our nutrients. Now, if it was so easy as just popping a pill, I think that a lot more people would be really, truly healthy and if it was really possible to absorb all those vitamins and minerals at once, I think we'd have some foods that contain all those vitamins and minerals. We have to remember that we require specific enzymatic functions to truly synthesize and utilize different vitamins, minerals, and metals within the body. Each vitamin that we take in each mineral that we take in has a different process to actually being utilized and if we take them all in at once, we're not really allowing the body to do that efficiently.

You're much better off knowing what is going to work for you and isolating specific vitamins and specific minerals for your type, for your bio individuality. So the thing we have to look at with multivitamins and we have this constant competition going on. Okay? We have constant competition of different minerals that sometimes need to be elevated and sometimes need to be lower, but we also have way too much of specific minerals.

isn't it sad how important proper nutrition is, yet it's not taught in public schools as much as math or science?

I have been taking a shit load of vitamins individual and multi since the 80's. I'm 56 yo and so much more healthier than my friends, family colleagues etc. I dont believe food today has the nutrients we all need. Studies show some areas where oranges have no VitC in them. Scary! Anyway I don't care if I make iHerb rich. Health is better than Wealth. Update: 10 years ago diagnosed with Prostate cancer via 2 x biopsies. Last week had another Biopsy. Result, cancer could not be found in any sample. Amazing results from dropping 40 pills a day of Vitamins and Herbs all related to each part of your body, building immunity and creating killer T cells.

I just got sucked into a 2 hour marathon of back to back auto-playing Thomas DeLauer videos. I feel like I've gained 2 years of keto and muscle building knowledge.

I take about 8 different vitamins for the past 6 months. They work. I was always told multi’s are not good enough. I see a big difference and feel it as well. Along with a healthy diet and strength training at 39 I feel like a machine.

Maybe they don’t “make you healthier” or “prolong but who cares, they give me lots of energy when I can’t eat perfect every day.

This is what I struggle with, first of all I don't eat a perfect whole foods diet, I just don't, yes I know that is the best way but to tell you the truth with so many different "truths" out there it gets difficult to know what is actual and what is not. Is Keto the way to go, do Beans and Lectins kill you, is grass fed beef the answer or the problem. I have always looked at a multivitamin/mineral pack as the insurance or gap filler like he said. I don't mind pissing out the extras even though that is a waste if it means that I am "topped off" on everything I do need. The other thing is what about the depletion of minerals and vitamins in the food we eat due to soil depletion, I read something like spinach is 100 times less healthy than it used to be due to this. Even organic.
Does anyone else struggle with knowing what to do?

I take vitamin D3, vitamin, k2, magnesium oil spray, iodine and turmeric as well as a probiotic. These make a difference to how I feel for sure.

The problem is our soils depleted decades ago and you get barely anything from even organic foods.

This video is one of the most enlightening ones I have seen. I didn't realise how much one vitamin impacts others & it makes sense, if we were meant to have all the vitamins we need in one go there would be foods containing that. I feel like I have had an epiphany this morning!

I take vitamin D, fish oil, tumeric, probiotics, magnesium, zinc, blueberry extract, rhodiola, and along with intermittent fasting. This is what works for me.

Umm, no - don't 'just trust' anyone ... everyone has motives/stands to gain from you in some way, and professional YouTubers are no exception ... obviously ... 😏

“All the multivitamins have a lot of iron” one a day men has literally zero iron.

Before I start, please keep in mind that what I'm about to say is merely my point of view. This particular subject is something I am highly invested in, which is why I'm such an advocate of fermentation, non-GMO foods, companion gardening (aka true organic food), permaculture, commercial organic foods, whole foods, pasture fed & finished animal products, and growing your own herbs & foods if, when & where possible. That in mind, I'd simply like to point out some things, provide feedback, and offer possible solutions because I find you to be a source of relative accurate & informative information and I truly do appreciate your time, dedication, enthusiasm, devotion and energy spent on creating these videos.

Firstly, it is important to recognize that there are multivitamins today that while not scientifically engineered for exactness are actually made from whole foods and can be taken in such a way as to optimize health as opposed to making the body work harder & less efficient. I get where you're coming from Thomas; between the two, multivitamins & natural foods, food truly is the best source of vitamins & minerals, even if much of it is mineral & vitamin depleted. Furthermore, why take a bunch of stuff if the body only needs one or two very specific things? Not only do I see the truth of what you're saying, it just so happens to agree with my own point of view. However, keeping in mind the importance of body/mind/emotion/spirit connection that determines overall health, due to the mental & emotional comfort some people find in taking a multivitamin, perhaps educating and encouraging them to better & healthier choices might be less discouraging and more helpful to your viewers.

Secondly, while I commend you on creating this video, the subject of whether or not to supplement with multivitamins is a vast & complex subject and simply cannot be covered with the thoroughness it requires in a 7-minute video, which explains the gaps in your explanation of certain things. For example, while I appreciate your thorough and accurate explanation of just how difficult it is for the body to process cyanocobalamin and why it's the poorest choice and is best avoided altogether, an equally thorough and accurate explanation of how methylcobalamin works and why it is the 'better' choice for people who do actually need B12 would be highly beneficial to your audience. Too, even though my point of view about iron supplementation is that there is a time and a place for iron supplementation & that not all iron supplementations are created equal, and while I concur of the excess iron in the body that does not show up in blood tests, which explains why many meat-eaters are also anemic, various potential solutions for ACCESSING those iron supplies would have incredibly beneficial to your viewers. Which brings me to my next point ... keeping in mind I do not know your long-term vision of this channel ... what about creating a 'series' of videos on one subject, such as you've done with the whole keto thing. For example, you could create an entire series on B12 - natural food sources vs supplementation as well as how to help the body better absorb these foods, (fermentation, food combining, etc). You could then link like-videos and cross-reference them as well as create specific playlists to make it easier for your viewers to follow. Of course this will require a lot more time, energy & effort, so that's something you'll also have to consider before choosing.

Finally, while I truly believe most of the vital nutrients in our food supplies have been diminished due to DNA tampering and massive commercial agriculture practices, I also believe many foods can be revitalized through ancient energy healing & ancient food preparation practices; it's just a matter of re-teaching people how to do that. Until then, and from a purely physiological perspective, I believe there will be times when certain bodies will need to rely on the use of multivitamins. Let's just hope people opt for healthier whole food varieties.
