Dumbarton castle is one of the most ancient strongholds of Scots that still sounds unique till the day. The name Dumbarton is derived from the Celtic-Scot language that means “The fortress of Britians.” It is situated on a volcanic plug, and the plug is said to be 340 million years old, while the age of the castle is almost 1500 years. It is situated on a 75 meters high rock, and whenever you plan to go there, you will find 500 steps waiting for you to reach the top.
Let's have a historical view of Dumbarton castle. Its first ever recorded appearances that historians find was in the letter of St Patrick that he wrote to the Ceretic of Alt Clut. The castle remained the home to different kings and was attacked multiple times by various rivals including Picts, Northumbrians, and Vikings. Dumbarton castle started facing disputes in the 6 century and it even witnessed World War. The army took its control in both World Wars and currently it is operating as a historic monument.
