In 870, Vikings laid siege to the castle, then known as Alt Clut, capturing it after a brutal four-month siege. Over centuries, it evolved into a formidable fortress, bolstered by Scottish kings like Alexander II and James IV. The castle played pivotal roles during the Wars of Scottish Independence and even housed William Wallace briefly before his execution. Today, it stands as a testament to Scottish resilience, offering panoramic views from its twin peaks, The Beak and The Summit, and remains a treasure trove for history enthusiasts.
