I love how she pronounces "Euros" with German pronunciation and a Vietnamese accent while speaking English.

I have a big extended family and when you said "for each child I'm related to in the village" I instinctually panicked.

One of my best friends in Elementary was a Chinese girl and I remember one year she invited me to her house to celebrate LNY. I don’t remember too much since I was only 8-9, but I do remember she, or rather her parents I suppose, gave me a red lucky envelope with £5 in it (probably around £8 or $10 today). As a Welsh white kid I had absolutely no idea why I was given this but I was a very happy kiddo that day.

I hope she’s celebrating LNY well this year.

Still cheaper and more practical than running around buying presents people don’t want, or need.

Growing up in the 1970s in Wales, new babies taken out for the first time used to receive a coin on top of their blanket in the pram from people who'd noticed they were new. Years later when I had my own baby, I returned and it was the early 2000s and people were still doing it! It was so cute.

Thank you for explaining this! There is a Vietnamese girl in my German class and she gave me some money the other day in a beautiful envelope. She told me it was a tradition for her and her family. It was so sweet even if I didn't really know the meanings and stuff behind it!

The nice part is that when you give them the money they smile, say thanks and say Happy New Years back which is worth it and it just feels good for some people

Damn, EUR400 is more than the minimal monthly salary in my country.

For all my fellow Americans out there, she’s spending around $434.97 US dollars 😉

One of my Mom's brothers is 58 years old and hasn't gotten married yet. He still got red envelopes every chinese lunar new year 😂

I know you’re Vietnamese but this brings back memories of a little Chinese girl I had in class in elementary school. She was the sweetest. She was a fellow loner. So tiny, petite, frail, sweetest smile with crooked kid teeth, short badly cropped hair that looked cute anyway, always wore a bow and had a rolling backpack. Every Chinese New Year her mom would bring the class a red envelope with a dollar. The face she would get, so proud of her momma coming into class and making everyone smile. It’s a shame she didn’t have more friends but she looked happy especially with a sweet mom like hers.

That's VERY generous of you. May what you give returns back to you ten folds 🤗

I know it's kind of unrelated but damn the enveloppes are SO beautiful.

One year later and I still love the way you pronounce “Euros” 😊

I’m not Chinese but I did Chinese immersion from K-8 so I celebrated chinese new year and the spring and fall festival every year and learned many traditional stories and legends. I got red evenlopes a few times, but usually it was candy cause teachers don’t get paid enough, but in K I was given 1 yen. We also put in a Chinese program every year. We learned songs dances and even had big dragon costumes that all the kids would fit it. The performance was different for each grade you were in. Every grade had s different Chinese teacher who were all born and raised in china. I’m so glad to have some of the culture in my life.

This breakdown would have been so helpful when I lived in Vietnam. I never knew how much was the appropriate amount to give because Vietnamese people are so polite.

As a kid I would see my parents give and receive money and I thought it wasn't fair to them so I took a red pocket with 20 cad and gave it to them, they gave it back to me and said kids aren't supposed to give red pockets I cried because I just wanted to do something nice for my parents 😭💔

Edit: Thanks for the likes the first time I got over 💯 (Thanks)

I have a Chinese client, he gave me $100, I was surprised. He's not someone to give money away normally so I was like, oh cool a bonus! I think one of his family told him, hey don't forget her haha, but it was appreciated.
