Tywin puts himself in a winning situation either way.

Tyrion gets captured. Sends the mountain out. If Tyrion is slain he's gone snd tywin can use him as matyr. If Tyrion survives it shows the Lannister strength. Same with the mountains men and tyrion being sent to stop stannis and they overwork and manage to work harder than the army.

Tywin gets win win situations.

I felt like Tyrion knew exactly what was happening he just accepted it.

I'm pretty sure Tyrion knew he wasn't getting out of the vanguard either way

I’m not super familiar with the books but I can see Tyrion taking the job to prove himself to his father, problem is no matter what Tyrion ever does he will never have Tywin’s approval.

Tywin's mistake was not realizing that it's never safe to underestimate a Lannister. He of all people should have known better.

If only Tywin understood that Tyrion was the most like him😢🤣

One thing I like about Tyrions character is that he makes all these smart decisions in the moment but they all backfire

Both good at manipulating others. Both with way to big of both pride and ego.

No one gives GRRM enough credit for his heraldry and house words.

I don’t think Tyrion “fell for the trick” he just found himself in an unwinnable situation. He was keenly aware what Tywin was doing, somthing the mountain clans were not when Tywin and Tyrion used the trick on them. Tyrion Finally found him self ever so gradually on the rise in his position. He got him self out of trouble, formed an army loyal to him, had a dangerous and loyal-ish right hand man, and had a role to play in the upcoming wars. Agreeing to guard the baggage trains would mean an immediate end to this rose, and would plummet him even lower than he had ever been. It would be portrayed as a cowardly choice, and honestly wasn’t really a viable option. The only way to escape Tywins was to go through it and hope he survived, which he does, and he emerges in a far stronger position then he had even been in.

Tywin was putting Tyrion into a position to have him killed not trying to make him look like a fool. The vanguard, the first into a fight, are the ones with the highest likelihood to be wounded and killed. Since Tyrion's men were the mountain clans and prided themselves on battle if he had picked the rearguard they would have killed him because it would look as if he was not honoring their agreement. Tywin veiled this as a matter of pride when in reality it was an attempt on Tyrion's life. No matter how Tyrion died it would either be viewed as they were obviously betrayed by savages stabbing them in the back or his son died honorably in combat. Tywin wouldn't lose face no matter what and both likely would see Tyrion dead. Tyrion picked up on this and recognized his best chance of survival and getting some sort of leverage was to go fight in the vanguard. The gamble paid off for Tyrion and it was only after this that the mountain clans truly began to respect and be loyal to him as well as Tywin realized Tyrion's potential.

In the books Tyrion is very prideful and if people hit his right button he can be both easily happy or pissed example are the Tyrells that compliment him which made him very Happy or Janos who pissed him by call him dwarf.

I think it shows the power a father can weild over their son’s, even those that hate their father.

I wouldn’t say Tyrion was a poor player. He had no real choice here. Having to guard the baggage train would’ve further diminished his already stunted reputation. He would’ve looked a small man.

Also, GRRM was reusing the Song of Roland here, although he tweaked some details. In the Song of Roland, the hero's stepfather Ganelon wanted to humiliate him (in retaliation for a previous sign of defiance) by letting him lead the rearguard, a position usually devoid of any risk, while the vanguard is the place where stuff happens. Roland then accepted to lead the rear... and fell into a trap Ganelon had set for him and his men, i. e. the Battle of Roncevaux!

I don’t think the two situations are as congruent as this video implies.

When the mountain clans’ men surrounded him and Bronn, Tyrion used their pride against them.

When Tywin proposed to put the clansmen and Tyrion in the vanguard, he was not appealing to Tyrion’s pride because Tyrion’s pride is reserved for his wits and cunning, not as a warrior. I think two two main factors in Tyrion’s reaction to his father’s order convey Tyrion’s thoughts that his father always gets his way no matter what, and also Tyrion’s self-pity.

Tyrion knew exactly what his father was doing but chose to do it anyway

"Really is his father's son"

Okay but haven't the books kinda foreshadowed that this might not even be the case?

Talking about parallel. Have anyone thinks that Tywin Lannister, Stannis Baratheon and Randal Tarly are GRRM copy paste same person? Like they basically three bald military commander with harsh punishment and family issues? It's even more weird one is king, and hand of king and a commander army.

Yet it was that coward Tywin who sat way back in the rear where it was safe while the battle took place while he sipped wine from a jeweled cup and never lifted a finger to fight in that battle.

Tywin only underestimate tyrion then. He played nothing.
