My son is a massage therapist and he HATES high heels for this reason. He said the thing he saw most in female clients was this. He had an older woman who was actually shocked when he explained how all her issues were connected to her wearing heels all the time.

She’s a real barbie. Forget the movie we got her.

My feet do this naturally and it's the goddamned Barbie movie that made me aware of it

This is also why young children are advised against heels. They’re at a growing age and such an impact is on a much larger scale on their Achilles’ tendon.

This is so true. I’ll never forget a patient I was trying to help out of bed and into a chair…she’s was 92 and her feet were contracted/stuck like this from wearing high heels her whole life. She was super cute tho and would still apply her red lipstick every morning. This was 15 years ago and I never forgot her lol

I dated a girl who did the same job in heals. Every night I had to give her calves a massage to help work out the stress. She used to comment on how it was her favorite part of the day because she felt like the stress was melting. I thought at the time it was just her being cute but now I realize she genuinely needed that 😂❤

My mother wore heels through the 1940s and 1950s as most women of her time did. She could not wear flats. She said they made her calves hurt. She was still staggering around in heels in her 70s, bless her heart.

As gymnasts we used to point our toes so much that our calves would shorten so during and after every practice and meet we would walk on our heels to loosen the calves. This was in the 1970’s and back then we also had Earth Shoes with inverted/lowered heels. I wore the ugly things for 4 years through high school to keep calves stretched. It HURTS when your calves shorten!

In my city, there was a business where waitresses were required to wear heels. They had to file a complaint against the business owner, because it was causing them pain and exhaustion.

I had a ballet teacher who told us the best way to avoid the shortening of calf muscles from wearing high heels was to do a couple of plié stretches once you’re out of them.
Idk how effective it is but it hasn’t steered me wrong yet and *definitely* feels good after an evening of wearing heels lol

My grandma had this same struggle from wearing heels for many decades. Her Achilles tendons actually shortened over time. She could not stand flat-footed at all without intense pain. We searched for months & found some slip-on wedge sandals that she loved that cost $100 a pair (in the mid 1980's). We ended up buying her 3 pairs in each of the 3 colors because she insisted on having enough of her "good house shoes" last as long as she did. ❤

I worked at an Alzheimer’s facility and one of our residents wore heels most of her life and her feet were stuck in Barbie mode for the remainder of her life so she remained wheelchair bound. (She said she was an ultimate girlie girl in the 40s-50s on.)

I had this exact problem growing up cause I would tiptoe everywhere. I had leg braces, and honestly besides the always fun feeling of them being cut off my leg when needed, they also taught me that knee high and thigh high socks are wonderful to wear.

Foot drop is brutal. Exercises are SO SO important. I took care of SO many elders with severe foot drop because they were 1940's-1950's housewives and spent literally decades in high heels every waking moment.

heels don't just affect the muscles, they also permanently deform the soles of your feet by destroying the natural cushioning of the foot as well as permanently deforming the bones of the lower legs and feet.
