Professional leather worker here. You can use water on suede, just don’t soak the leather. You can use a light foam suede cleaner with some water to clean the suede and once dried you can use a light spray conditioner to moisturize the fibers and then finally brush with a firm brush.

The first two steps didn't do anything for the black stain on my new light colored suede shoes. But your final suggestion, using an ordinary eraser, worked! 👍Two days later I couldn't remember which shoe the stain was on... that's how good the "eraser technique" was!! You can use water to clean suede, just dont over soak the brush you use, dab dry with clean paper towels, allow to fully dry before bringing the knap of the suede up with a dry brush, by using a rubber you are removing some material, this can create bald spots or discoloration.

Does work, but its not ideal. Some good tips.
