One of my sons was an exchange student at a university in America, and many of his college friends came to visit him in Leeds after he came back, all of them were absolutely knocked out with the city and its people.

Leeds got its name from an ancient forest called Leodis that once stood in its place I believe? I don't believe it existed in the Viking age anyway, places in Leeds like Morley did though. Wakefield was the seat of Viking power for the west riding. As the Vikings would have said "Jorvik vestr þriðjungur". The university of Leeds wanted to collaborate with the council to create the world's first self repairing city using robotics and drones. Apparently around 4 and a half thousand jobs in advanced manufacturing are soon coming to Leeds, that's on top of the tens of thousands of jobs being created by these developments.. It's a great international city, and is a "Brain gain" city, it's GDP grew 40% in under ten years, and it's city centre is set to double in size over the next few years and an urban park is coming to central Leeds, it also has boat taxis that were imported from Holland. It's an outward looking city made up of people from across the world

Also Yorkshire dialect contains over a thousands words of Viking origin, like "Mun" in Yorkshire dialect it means "Must" but in old Norse it was "Munu" meaning "Will"

I may need correcting but to refer to a female as a Bird is from London. In days of old girl flower sellers used to whistle and sing to attract customers . They were called little sparrows, Sparrows cant sing, hence little bird, which then became a little cockney sparrow . Only young women are called birds by blokes ie a London slang word for young men.

There's a lot more to Leeds than Kirkstall and the city centre though. Try Moortown and beyond - they're lovely areas.

My daughter and I went to Leeds in May to the Royal Armouries Museum, not to be missed. Leeds is first rate, we are planning another trip by Train from London in late October 2018. Real people not like London.
