Humans: Sophisticated dumb tech
Covenant: Dumb sophisticated tech

There was a case (in the book Fall of Reach), where Cortana was rummage through a Cov ship and finding the ship's plasma Cannon were horribly inefficient and had very crude calculations, just well enough to make the plasma ball and guide it to the target.

She reconfigure one of the cannons to turn the ball into a beam, and end up slicing a attacking ship in two 😅. After a few shots, the turret end up burning out due to the output.

The fact that Cortana was able to calculate and execute a Slipspace jump using Ascendant Justice's Slipspace drive *while falling inside of Threshold's atmosphere* is incredible.

I like how it says "we" and "our" as I f it us the audience that is facing the Covenant. I just really like that

Number 1: Humanity is at its most dangerous when pushed into a corner.

Another interesting area in which the UNSC excelled was its utter domination of ground based combat. Spartans, well ordered infantry, and excellent training led to most marines and army soldiers being far more capable than any of their covenant infantry counterparts spare the elites.

That the Covernant were able to use Forerunner technology that way is quite remarkeble considering that only humans really can use it.

I think the biggest advantage is that the UNSC/Humanity isn't locked into a religious war. They are a true military faction with real command structure and a intelligently run (albeit it maybe a bit sketch) head of command. Instances like the cole protocol are testament to this. There was also an instance in Ghosts of Onyx when Blue Team breach a Covenant cruiser and make note of how the ship layout is the exact same, even after multiple different breaching runs. They essentially have unrestricted access to anywhere they want to go. They also make the contrast that had a UNSC ship been breached, boarded, and destroyed, the entire High Command system would've altered the interior halls so that it wouldn't happen again. It's instance like these that make you realize how Humanity stayed in the war so much longer than they really should have.

Another reason the Covenant didnt understand their own technology that well was because they used Huragok so much and got complacent, the Elites had a particularly hard time with that after the war. Its mentioned in one of the kilo five books i think.

I love the idea that the Covenant have the same style of technological understanding as the Imperium of Man in 40k: "We found the designs for this in an ancient ruin and we consider it sacred so we don't try to change how it works, in fact it's considered heresy for anybody to understand how any of it works except for our holy engineers(Huragok and Adeptuc Mechanicus, respectively)

I think another advantage humanity had over the Covenant was that they were much more of a cohesive unit when they were fighting than the Covenant were. Grunts are afraid of the Elites and Brutes and are cowardly, which the Elites hate and see as dishonorable. Elites and Brutes despise each other so much to the point that you can't even have them on the same ships, and so on and so on. Humans on the other hand are all working together and don't actively hate each other like the Covenant do. Hell, even some Insurrectionist groups, who were just fighting a civil war with the UNSC, helped some of their fleets from time to time.

Another advantage we had was on the ground, in the books it says we always lost the naval battles unless the fight was 3 to 1 in our favor and even then we could lose. On the ground we had better tactics as we appreciate and preserve as much life as possible where as the covies would throw grunts at the lines to be slaughtered while jackles would try crude old fashioned line fighting walls or sniping at us. The elites would be a pain but marines got really good at overwhelming their shields with concentrated fire and taking them down. Probably the only times the covanant would consistently get any foothold on land was with Hunters. But even then they started using SPANKERS on them.

a big one most folks don't think about; we're a single species with seemingly just two languages. this way, we understand each other better and get along easier.

in-fighting caused more damage to the mixed species, multi-cultural Covenant than the Master Chief himself.

hunters are prone to careless friendly fire as they don't give a single shit about other species. Grunts would be straight up OP if they weren't held back by other species. drones got their own feud going on with the engineers. brutes come from a problematic culture which deserves more credit for the Covenant downfall than the Flood itself

While most UNSC technology or weapons don’t stand up to their Covenant counterpart in a 1:1, there is one huge exception- Artificial Intelligence.

In multiple books it’s stated Covenant AIs were far less advanced than their UNSC counterparts likely due to their way of developing technology mentioned in the video. In one example Cortana even overrode a Covenant AI and noted how much less advanced it was.

The UNSC is better at maximizing their strengths and minimizing their weaknesses than the Covenant is

After the Covenant broke up, and the restrictions on meddling with forerunner tech were made moot, it does seem like the species that used to be part of the Covenant wised up and started developing some of their own technology, whether it utilized designs reverse engineered from the Forerunners is hard to say, but stuff like the Unggoy Goblins were nothing to scoff at. Honestly, the Covennat were just very inefficient in general, not just in how they utilized technology, but the way they utilized their people too, it was all a crudely balanced charade to keep everybody complacent and to put down their ambition.
