Just when you thing you know everything about how to grow, Mark comes along a prove you wrong.

I figured I could turn my reply into a rhyme poem.

Have a bless day.

I love the scapes. Tender parts go in fresh salads and scape pesto. Tougher parts cooked with asparagus bottoms for soup.

Last year i grew sweet clover with my Trucker corn it worked fine i did clear it away around 6 inches around the corn stalk root. So it wasn't competing for water or nutrients if it was my stalks where over 12/14 foot tall.

I’m planning to build an herb spiral because I have piles of stone, and sandy, stony grit near a sunny formerly turfed area frequented by voracious town deer. I don’t think I consciously, specifically associated the idea with permaculture, but it makes sense, as an outgrowth of responding to the land, and other environmental factors with a vision of what will increase verdancy and beauty.

I am zone 9b and growing Music for the first time. May have planted them in Feb but the bulbs are large now. Noticed the scapes last week and forgot about them. Thank you for the timely reminder. Some of the scapes were over 3’ long…

Why did you choose purple dead nettle as a cover? The garlic looks great!

Interestingly, I grow Music also, third year on a farm now 33 years chemical-free. I purchased them from a farm 30 organic certified 10 minutes from where I grew up. The average size has already significantly increased, and this year, I might as well follow your recommendation. Put in extra mulch today and now they're due for watering in this bit of a heatwave we're in.

Can only grow soft neck garlic in the south. Enjoy for us.

I have about 12 red Russian garlic bulbs growing but no sign of scapes yet. I, however will save one or two of them for bulbils for fall planting along with 20 regular cloves for next year.

Will follow your advice about cutting them at right stage.

I have garlic growing for the 1st time and there don't seem to be any large leaves just the garlic scape with what I thought was a garlic seed bulb. The other garlic has just wilted away.
Another person said to pull the garlic when there's a seed bulb growing from the scape or leaves?
Also would garlic be toxic enough to harm deer? Don't want to harm the deer.
(So elephant garlic and hardneck garlic form the seed heads so that's what I have and the soft neck garlic failed.)

What do you think about cover crop mixes that include 10+ things like a mix of clover, rye, vetch, bean, pea, radish? I have noticed you typically stick to a single variety.

Interesting video Mark. I was out in my garlic patch here in Illinois this afternoon. I'm interested in your thoughts as to why you wait for the scapes to curl before removing them instead of just cutting them out as soon as you recognize them as scapes, not leaves.

Mark- Was the experiment over seeding the garlic bed with clover (What kind ?) after planting the seed cloves last fall?

I love your video content. I'm growing my first garlic this year and I just harvested my scapes this morning but I didn't know about how long they should be before I cut them. What happens if they made a circle already?

So glad you did this video.

I am in zone 6B in SW Mi. I have no signs of scapes yet.

It's hardneck garlic. We put in late last October. It is aboutvthe same size as yours.

I have been watching carefully for them. It is a bit worrisome.

It's been dry here also with lower than normal temps. Could this be the reason?

Thank you for everything you do for us.
