I have had good results in growing Garlic as a Perennial. It produces clumps of greens that can be cut in the Spring when there are few vegetables to eat and is a welcome addition to dishes. By cutting it, it does not produce large cloves, but is an additional method to traditional culture. The secret is choosing a variety that is Winter hardy for your area. I have had good luck with Red Russian and German Red here in Maine USA.

I disagree, I plant early and the green growth does not freeze under the snow. The plants have time to establish good growth before winter. I get good size heads.

Cut the tops of whole garlic buds. Sprout them in water. Within a week, they'll have a good set of roots. Lightly separate the cloves and plant them in loose, well drained soil. Add bone meal, crushed egg shell, composted manure to your regular garden soil and mix it in well. Just eyeball the amounts, none of these will negate your hard work. Plant the rooted cloves in moist soil in a sunny location. Mulch around the green tops as they emerge. Keep the area moist but not wet. The instruction about yellow tips is correct. Don't allow the new bulbs to go to seed. My grandmother used the little rubber bands used on dental braces. As the greens began to fall over and before yellow leaf tips showed, she wrapped those around the greens about 2" above the bulb. She said it provided energy that was feeding the green bits to be transfered to the bulbs, causing them to get bigger.

I have not tried the rubber band trick.

Interesting to leave 3 spears as an indicator of ripeness. German Red and Red Russian can be grown for harvesting the greens in winter.
