More Information:
Ice cream floats are a popular treat combining the simplicity of ice-cream and refreshing taste of soda. Root beer floats with vanilla ice-cream are a traditional favourite over in America. Because they're not particularly popular here in Ireland, we decided to have a number of our contributors try them to see what they thought.

Back in the day - A&W root beer floats were to die for! They always came in that heavy frosty cold glass mug. What a treat.

I'm now convinced that root beer is just like American Vegemite. If your taste buds aren't introduced to it at a young age, they will forever reject it.

There are two types of people in this world. Root Beer people and everyone else. Thankfully I am in the Root Beer camp.

I'm American. Cream soda has always been part of my life, and I love it. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of root beer, but I was shocked by how much they hated it.

Apparently Irish people don't like chocolate, root beer, or happiness.

I will guess that Root beer float
Is the most liked float here in the Midwest. Along with a burger or breaded tenderloin. Side of onion rings

It fascinates me to see how strongly and consistently the hosts dislike certain items such as peanut butter and root beer. I know there are people in the US who grew up with exposure to these items and still don't like them, but the reactions on this channel do make me think the *strong* reactions must be related to what foods you are regularly exposed to as children. :)

So ... I LOVE root beer. But I've been studying this phenom literally for decades: Virtually everyone born in the US LOVES root beer (not everyone, but virtually everyone born here). Virtually everyone not born here think it's disgusting. Folks who hate it often compare the taste / smell to "my grandmother's ointment". If you find that shocking, I have 2 words for you: "Ben Gay" ... remember that ointment that was popular in the 1950-1970s? For muscle aches? It smells EXACTLY the same as modern root beer. Around the 1960s, it was found that the sassafras root that root beer(s) had been made from contained some carcinogenic compounds. Then someone discovered that you could fake the flavor of sassafras with a combination of wintergreen & peppermint and some other flavorings -- modern root beer was born -- from the same stuff used to soothe aching muscles. And it is AWESOME over vanilla ice cream.
