Followed these instructions and it is working great. I'm using this system on a B-cam that is slightly out of reach (and stops recording every 11/12 minutes). This was a big help. Thanks man!

@romodrummerjz The guy who does all my post production will be coming on board soon to help us start a new series all about post production. Once we get HDSLR 101 shot and edited, we'll start working on that. Stay tuned!

i'm surprised that I haven't seen this around much.. I guess it could be a problem keeping it lined up when changing lenses etc.. cool idea though!

I used to work in whole-house av. The IR comes out of an LED, so you could pop open the remote, clip off the LED, and use a couple of wires to extend the position of the LED and locate it in front of the IR sensor.

This gave me an idea, an optic fibre cable is not exactly cheap, so I'm thinking maybe a clear acrylic rod that is cut to size and bent with a heat gun to fit the rig and remote's fixed position. Gonna get a thin acrylic rod to try this out.

very usefull!! I think you ccan adopt that method to most DSLRs that have an infrared port, like the Pentax K7 or KX. Really good explained and documented. I might give it a try.

I was hoping you came up with a mechanical way to push the record button so it could be used on nearly any camera equipped with an IR remote or not. Good tutorial though, thanks.

cutting the fibre optic cable should not be done with house items like a scissor or a wirecutter because the cable ends are going to be scratched and or squashed which will make transmitting light extremely difficult, i havent tried this myself but i learned how to repair fibrecables at work and they always told us to always use the special cutting thingy. if you want your cable to be trimmed of perfectly, you could ask at your local car repair shop, they should have that special cutting tool

I'm looking for a remote for wildlife - would need a longer cable though. Are those fibre optic cables available in longer varieties?

@weeliano I was very lucky I found an electronics store over here in Singapore that sells LED lighting grade plastic resin optic fibre at 3mm diameter. I bought 1 m for around $6.50 US and it works very well!

I love the music that you chose. Trololol, Some Ragtime which I don't know but still sounded awesome, and Mario.

So let me get this straight:
So it's a $1, 500 Red Rock Micro rig w/ Follow Focus mounted to a $2, 000 5D body with what looks like an L Series lens...
...controlled by a cable taped to a hanger?

That non-professional... I understand the need to make your own things when your new, quite honestly I am just getting into HDSLR Cinematography/Photography, Canon T3i, how ever I would never attach this to my rig. I would either use a remote shutter release, or modify the remote so the IR is longer, or make a small IR repeater and integrate it into the shoulder rig. It will make it look much more professional. Kinda like Gissur37's comment, I would do it similar... just my 2c.
