How Far Does Each Golf Club Go For A Mid (13) Handicapper?

How far does each golf club go for a mid handicapper? I hit my 13 clubs 5 times each and calculate the average carry distance. Everyone is different but here are the distances for one average player. When I left off in the fall my hcp was 13. With a lot of practice in the simulator over the winter I hope to improve this season but time will tell. One more step in the Golf Quest.

Had the same issue as you with my 5 and 4 having literally no difference in yardage. Switched to a 4 hybrid and problem solved. Nice video

Very Cool! Thanks for sharing. What is exciting about this for you is - you have identified a gapping issue. You have an opportunity to eliminate some clubs from your bag - and maybe add some others. 5 Wood over 3 Wood comes to mind - and you may be able to take out your six and 4 iron - and add another hybrid - or....add a couple wedges to close the gaps at the lower end of your bag. You have a lot of great opportunities to lower your scores with a different club configuration - that is actually GREAT news!

I am 64 yrs old and playing off a 13 as well. My driver carry is 220Yd, 5 wood 165 Yd, 7 iron 138 Yd, Pw 100 Yd. The shorter carry is made up with a lower dispersion and in particular my wedges are fairly spot on. Working on increasing my swing speed and attack angle to get another 20 yds from my driver. I think I can bring my handicap down to 10 if I succeed.

Great video. Glad I came across it. As a 'Lefty' in the UK I also had a few gapping issues. I've ditched the 3W for a 5W, added a 7W (awesome club), ditched the 5i (not fast enough clubhead speed to make it work) and added a 4Hyb (21°). Good gapping but now just need to learn how to hit the buggers! 😀

Well hello there! Are you me? 14 hdc, lefty. Old Mizuno MX17 irons 3-SW, TM Jetspeed hybrid, TM R7 3 wood. I even have the same UA hat haha. Similar numbers from me, except the driver which I am not using at the moment. You got a subscriber!

In my 20s and 30s I hit my 5-iron about 175. Now in my 70s I hit the 5-WOOD 175!

Those two charts are pretty accurate in describing my distances. I'm 65 y.o. and have a 2 handicap hitting from the white tees and fall in the "Mid Hitter" and "Average" categories.

Cool data! You should probably get rid of that 4 iron from the bag and open up a spot for a gap wedge.

Wow. You are so far ahead of me. Good job.

I killed my bag this year, and am just going with a premium 9, 7, and 5 iron. Forget the 4, 6, and 8. Got a full compliment of wedges to go with it.

Good to see the average of each club. Some of the longer clubs are pretty close together. You might want to figure out what clubs you could get to replace to spread out gaps.

Lots of advice in the comments. Anyway, thanks for sharing this. I found it helpful. I hit my woods about the same as you. I'm assuming you get a little over 2 hundred with your 3 wood off the tee. I can't hit my irons even close to your distances. I'm easily 10-15 yards below your distances. Good luck on lowering your handicap. I'm about even there too.

Some impressive carry numbers there and total yardage numbers, I agree once you go below the 6 iron things change!

A few things, may want to consider, first off you need to get with an experienced fitter because you have some gapping issues in your bag. First change possibly a 4 or 5 wood to replace your 3 wood. Unless you’re swinging over 100mph and make good contact most AMs just can’t hit a 3 wood effectively. But you need something to hit closer to 210-215 and id about bet you’d crush a 5wd 15-20 yards further than the 3 wood because you’re just not getting launch and ball speed out of the 3. Between your 3hy, 4i, and 5i you have 3 clubs that go nearly the same distance. A 4hy or 7 wood to replace the 4 iron might be helpful. You have a similar problem with your 6 and 7 iron and with your PW and Gap Wedge. It appears you have an older, possible 2nd hand set of irons. May need to get your lofts nand lies checked to make sure the gapping is good on the irons you do keep. If those two wedges are in spec you may want to go to a higher lofted gap wedge. Again a competent fitter can help you out. I’d do a few more gapping sessions. But right now you could pull 2-3 clubs from the bag and simplify your life lol (3H-4i-5i) pick one lose the other 2, consider one replacement for the 4/5, possibly a hybrid or a 7 wood.

I was pretty much where you were last year in that I tended to have my distances bunch up at the top of the bag. I redid my bag, not the cheapest thing to do in the world, but ultimately ended up 52-56-60 wedges. 8-P in a small “player’s iron” type head. 5-7 hybrids. 3-7-9 woods. And of course driver and putter. This gave me consistent gapping and “precision” at the bottom of the bag and “forgiveness” at the top and most importantly, a nice 14-15 yard gap between all my clubs. This has resulted in a drastic increase in GIR and a handicap drop from 15 to 6. I also chip with an 8 or 9 iron, so that’s the reason for the style of club I picked.

Interesting I would find your channel. I'm a left handed 13 Handicap. I built my own golf simulator in my garage, I have the same Tayler made burner hybrid, and the BRZ 3 wood.
I'm not in Canada all though I suspect you are with the use of the "Zed" for Z. But, I'm not too far from Canada, I'm in Wisconsin and I also haven't it a ball outside for 5 months.
Thanks for posting your video's, I've subscribed to your channel and will be checking out your other video's soon. Thank you.

It's crazy how your shorter irons are way longer than mine, but then I catch up at the 4 iron, which I hit about the same....and then my hybrids and woods are quite a bit longer.
I wish I could get my wedge over 100 yards because there's a big gap between it and my 9 with my 4 iron (180ish) and 3h (200ish).
My handicap is 15.5 by the way.

Very interesting. I'm also a mid-handicapper. My woods are nearly identical, but my irons I hit about 14% less far than you, but probably higher. I suspect that this is soley due to a difference in lofts. Modern "game improvement" irons have a 7 irons with a loft of 27 degrees, which is the same as my 5 iron. If you compare my 5i to your 7i, 6i to your 8i, 7i to your 9i, etc, the distances are pretty close.

I think you’d see a huge improvement in consistency with your long irons if you shorten the shafts a bit. I used to struggle a bit with my 4 and 5 iron until I shortened them to the length of my 6 iron and immediately started controlling my long irons like a mid iron. Pure strikes are the name of the game. I’ll trade 10% distance for 10% accuracy any day of the week

Did I miss the bit about what lofts these clubs are. They vary across manufacturers and how far each go relative to another maker is used as a marketing ploy.
