In this video, hear a performance of Bach's Air (from Orchestral Suite no. 3), as performed by Tafelmusik.
Bach's Orchestral Suite no. 3 was originally composed for trumpets, timpani, oboes, strings, and harpsichord. The second movement of the suite, the Air, calls for just strings and harpsichord. Here we offer an arrangement for violin, oboe, bassoon, harpsichord, and double bass. An arrangement written by violinist August Wilhelmj, 871, has come to be known as "Air on the G String", and is one of classical music's most recognizable melodies.
This performance was originally recorded as part of Café Counterculture: a concert which combines Tafelmusik’s baroque flair with arrangements of '60s folk favourites by Joni Mitchell, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Simon and Garfunkel, and more.
