The Secret Technique That Made Ayrton Senna Untouchable in the Rain

What made Ayrton Senna a legend on wet tracks? It was his unique driving style. You've probably heard about his throttle technique, right? Most people think it was used to keep the turbo spinning so he could blast out of corners. But here's the thing: this video is from 1992, when Formula 1 cars no longer had turbos! This style actually started in karting. Senna used to apply the throttle in short, quick bursts, just like he did during tests with the Honda NSX. These rapid throttle inputs helped him maintain stability and control, keeping traction and avoiding loss of grip. A wet track required insane focus and bravery, as water on the tarmac dramatically reduced tire grip, and Senna wasn’t afraid to take risks when others played it safe. He became one with the car. His lightning-fast reactions allowed him to feel the car’s power limits, and that’s what made him a true legend.

53 y.o. brazilian here. I watched him running until his death. That wasn't the reason. Senna developed an obsession with rain. After losing his first F1 race in the rain, he began training as if he were possessed. Every time it rained, while the other drivers stopped training, he kept driving until time ran out or the racetrack had to be closed. Everyone had already left and arrived home, while Senna was doing lap after lap on a wet track. The more rain, the better. That's how he became unbeatable in the rain. Training and an obsession with perfection.

People said he loved to race in the rain, which he corrected a brazilian journalist once telling her he freaking hated it actually.
So basically he just accepted it and dealt with it, pretty much mastered

"On a given day, a given circumstance, you think you have a limit. And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit, and you think, 'Okay, this is the limit'. And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high."
- Ayrton Senna

3 races that stand out for me (amongst many) is Donington 93 when he started in 4th, went to 5th and then first in the wet, within 1 lap. Or the Monaco when he was 55 seconds ahead of second place (and he was getting faster and faster) or the Brazil win in 92 I think when he was near the back, got to front and then gearbox broke and he had to drive it in 6th for 7 or so Laps. He was so far in lead that they never caught him. Or other races where he *LAPPED* drivers in the wet. He was insane.

Jim Clark & Ayrton Senna…those two men for me are the absolute greatest racing drivers of all time…Clark maybe shades it purely in terms of all out god given natural driving ability but we’ve not seen drivers like those two men since

What makes Senna so untouchable in the lore of F1 is his religious devotion. NO other driver even comes CLOSE to Senna in this regard. His presence and obvious devotion to God and people with less is undeniable. He had become one with his car and knew how to drive to the ragged edge of the limit. He really was the greatest.

The best ever! Both 7 time champions agree. Best in the rain and won multiple races with slower cars. He pushed the limits way beyond anyone. If he hadn’t passed, god only knows what he would’ve done to the F1 record book

I’m no racing driver and senna was probably one of if not the best ever but I can’t imagine being on and off the throttle through a corner would be ideal for the tyre life and over heating them! Maybe worked back then but I doubt it would now!

Helps you to take corners assisting the turning circle, keep balance and grip

I recall an interview with him when he recounted a race in karts during rain. “It was an absolute disaster”
Because of that, whenever it was raining, he insisted on driving his kart when everyone else was waiting for the rain to stop. He was a perfectionist.

It used to be called, "keeping the engine on the boil". It's keeping the torque on and off the drive train so he maintains grip on and off while maintaining corner speed.

fun fact, he never said that he liked the rain, quite the opposite he found it really hard, but he was so trained and talented that he was a master in those conditions

not sure how much credibility this comment has because i'm a noob on a sim, but i have to say i've personally noticed how helpful this is in conditions with little grip. almost like ABS for the throttle. you smack the throttle, let go to give the wheels a second to regain their grip, and repeat. the same way abs works in low grip secenarios, .
