My old man taught me how to play chess when I was five. It was a board that didn't have actual pieces, but squares that showed how each piece could move. When I got older we started playing on a board with actual pieces. We must have played more than a few hundred times between when I was five and fifteen. He kicked my ass every single time. And then, when I was fifteen, I finally beat him. He pushed his king over in defeat, and then gave me a huge bear hug and told me how proud he was of me. Forty plus years later still one of my favorite memories. He made me earn the victory, and that's what makes that memory so special.

One time I played 4 chess games at once in a park...everyone thought I was brilliant...then I lost all 4 games.

“Arrogance has to be earned.”
That is so true, so many people are arrogant yet they haven’t earned it.

The fact that this kid could beat House at chess should have surprised no one, including the audience, least of all House. The kid is established in previous scenes to be a tournament level chess player. House is a casual player. Anyone with even the most passing familiarity with the chess world knows that any tournament level player could easily beat almost any casual player nearly every time regardless of the ages involved.

No, what's interesting about this scene is House's successful attempt to stress the kid out for diagnostic purposes.

I'm surprised Ben Shapiro didn't sue for his likeness being portrayed.

“Bird’s Opening, passive approach.” Um…that opening is aggressive and risky. Definitely NOT the sign of a coward.

So I've seen the full episode and the kid is smart. He knew he couldn't win so he went with the next best thing, bluffing. It's an important tactic especially in poker.

Why didn't you show the end. Spoilers ahead:

House finds a winning sequence of moves and when he tells the kid, the kid is like: I knew, I was bluffing so that you surrender and I win
