Transcribing and ear training are also CRUCIAL for practicing improvisation. Being able to quickly, immediately and accurately understand what you hear in a musical setting is just as important, if not even more important, as understanding what you’re playing.

Because I am a freelance jazz musician, I would also like to add repertoire
If one has all of the best technique in the world and can improvise but doesn't know any tunes, it can still be a challenge to be a working musician

I think a third thing to practice is your ear: how to understand the music you want to play, understand the dinamics when playing with a band and the relation between what you want to play in relation to the ensamble.

You gotta know songs though man. You are totally right that technique and improv are king in improvement and very crucial, but learning tunes helps you apply these things, and let’s you actually play with other musicians in a real world context.

By far the hardest part of improvisation is coming up with riffs on the spot that aren’t in completely random odd times.

Been practicing scales with a metronome, increasing speed every 2 weeks and it’s awesome to see how much carryover there’s been not just with the expected scale improvements but into learning songs quicker as well as the patience and skill playing through them.
