Linux on ARM is quite old. The M1 design is that excites people. I hope that other companies catch on and we have plenty of EXCELLENT arm chips available. Apple does not saved out on M2, it used DDR5 even on the base machine (M1 MBA 13 and MBP 13, both use DDR4, the 14/16 with DDR5 too). As far as right now or in the near future, there is no competitors in the ARM front for the Apple Silicon. Qualcomm launched Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, that has an ok performance, far behind the M2... The matter of fact is that everybody is afraid of launching ARM CPUs, since of the lack of success in the past, we had plenty of tries. To be sincere I believe that the first step of this line up was the success of the Ipad Pro line, showing that you could launch dependable and professional software for the ARM line up.

I used to think the Linus Tech Tips guy made Linux lol

if I understood correctly from Phoronix, Torvalds didn’t build the kernel on the Mac since he is using the still in development Asahi Linux. It was just good enough for him to prepare the release.

Also, I don’t think he is working at all on Linux for Apple Silicon. He seems to just be appreciating what the Asahi team is doing.

By the way, they just released the Lenovo Thinkpad x13s with the Qualcomm snapdragon 8 gen 3... extra nice battery life, so so performance with Windows 11 Pro ARM... starts at USD 1349...

Actually Linus from Tech Tips admitted in a recent video that he hadn't touched his Framework laptop in months.

The whole family of Raspberry Pis, Beagle Bones, etc, are ARM SoC running Linux. Whether they are usable as development platform is open to debate, at least Linus does not think so.

The dude just needs an ARM laptop to iron out issues with Linux on ARM CPUs and the M2 Air is probably the easiest to get his hands on. This doesn't validate the M2 Air in any way other than Linus Torvalds was happening to use that laptop when he pushed a new release.

I don't know if you know this (you probably do) but you're a funny guy! That intro and the Framework reference were pure gold! LOL

RaspberryPi is ARM and I've been using Linux on that forever. Also AWS and Oracle Cloud has ARM systems you can deploy in the cloud.

anyone tried Asahi on m1 max? What’s the performance?

For those that have tried Asahi on apple silicon...does docker work OK?

But!
For developers making a living from Programming no one would oppose the best Dev OS a.k.a Linux on a Fast chip such as the M2. Gone are the days when I only ran Open Source software, may be coz of Richard Stallman's influence, and that was like 20+ years ago. Now, I'm using the AMD Ryzen ThreadRipper for CPUs, Nvidia GPUs with "proprietary" drivers, and I wouldn't mind to jump to the M2 once they're fully operational with Linux, if that means making my life easier than it is.

To me Linux is an enigma. I've never met an actual person who uses it. I've worked in multinational semi-conductor, software and banking firms but all use Windows. And now I'm delving into ML on MacOS with python. Everything seems to work fine on MacOS and Windows. Is Linux just a flex for developers?

Are they working on "Windows for ARM"? That would be cool.

They'll never make fully upgradeable laptop, because they need to milk those consumerismic hamsters

Android is Linux based so in effect running on ARM for a long time, just saying!

Linux is for people that don't want corporations to controll the software on their computer. I was freaked out, when Windows 10 started to install games and ads after a first run.

I recently purchased the mbp. I love the hardware, I just can't stand the hideous macos. Asahi is definitely not ready yet, but hopefully by new year I can use Asahi as my daily driver.

Honestly if Linux on Apple Silicon matures enough and Apple fixes their pricing / repairability (or lack thereof) issues I'd be completely ok buying one for my personal use. I'm quite certain that the first is going to happen. Not so sure about the latter.
Also - it would be extremely interesting to compare CPU efficiency between M2 and the upcoming AMD Zen 4 CPUs. Since the M2 didn't really change the fabrication node and Zen 4 is going to be on TSMC 5nm as well my guess is that at least the laptop chips from AMD will have similar efficiency.

PS: I don't understand why people keep comparing to Intel when it's been quite trash efficiency-wise for a while now (at least since AMD launched Zen 2)

Hector Martin is the brain behind Asahi, not an apple insider lol
