The colonisation story between 1642 and 1700 often gets skipped over in favor of the early Jamestown/Plymouth stuff. Glad this video digs into the less-covered middle decades — they really shaped everything after

In 1655, Britain under Cromwell first attempted to take the island of Hispaniola and sieged the city of Santo Domingo. The Spanish with 2500 inexperienced soldiers, under the Count of Peñalva, fought off 13k British soldiers under the command of General Venables. Although they captured Jamaica, the siege of Santo Domingo was a great stain for the legacies of General Venables, and Admiral Penn and marked as a failure Oliver Cromwell’s “Western Design”. 🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴

Nice to see this "Early American history" video!

You barely mentioned the iberian Union. It's what really screwed up the Portuguese and allowed the Dutch to even have that foothold in Brazil.

The legacy of the big 4 empires is 3 billion people speaking English, 600 million people speaking Spanish, between 300 and 500 million people speaking French and 300 million people speaking Portuguese really impressive!!!! And also the spread of Catholicism

France carried out 11, 118 slave trade crossings, transporting 3.2M Africans, 25% of the transatlantic slave trade. Only the UK, 27% (3.4M) and Portugal, 46% (5.8M) did more

Fascinating breakdown of how European powers carved up the Americas! It’s wild to think how much of modern history was shaped by just a few decades of colonization trade, conflict, and cultural clashes all playing out on such a massive scale. The Dutch, English, French, and Spanish rivalry really set the stage for the world we know today. Would love to see a follow-up on how indigenous nations resisted and adapted during this period. Great video!

18:05 I’d argue that the French only really colonized the St. Lawrence Valley, Acadia, and the Mississippi Delta region. While they traded into the Louisiana territory and Canada beyond the Great Lakes, they never had effective political control over the territories or the Indigenous peoples living there. As such, their influence was certainly imperial, but to say they successfully colonized the North American interior ascribes to them more power and control than they ever actually had.

While you probably could have shown more confederacies (the Oceti Sakowin/Great Sioux Nation and the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara come to mind) in North America, I do appreciate the inclusion of the Blackfoot and Iron Confederacies in this video.

Naming him king Philip was in itself of a huge disrespect and mockery, the Europeans were extremely savage in action. Ruthless

The Spanish empire had conquered Mexico, Southern and western united states and southern and western canada and had expanded to the borders of Alaska (now USA) and ruled
Gautamela, Panama, costa rica,
Santo Domingo, Cuba, west indies,
Western part of Brazil, columbia,
Bolivia, Peru chile, argentina new guinea, later the United States of central America and Mexico became independent in 1822 .
And the United States of America became independent from British in 1776 and gained independence in 1783 and became united states of america in 1789 with presidential system of government.
Brazil also became independent from Portuguese empire in 1822 and was under constitutional monarchy from 1822 until 1889 and underwent several republics and dictatorships till 1985 when the current sixth republic was founded and Canada became independent from the British in 1867 with the dominion of Canada and became independent in 1945 increasingly after wwii and several African countries became independent from British.
Columbia was annexed by the British from the Spanish and later also gained independence from British.

We all talk about the British empire but we often sideline the Portuguese Spanish and French empires I mean they were as big and influential as the British empire at a time and had lots of influence I mean the Portuguese empire was at 10 million km2 the Spanish empire was 20 million km2 and the French empires the first (10 million km2) and the second (13.5 million km2 for a total of 24 million km2
