Unlike India, China is very difficult to conquer.
In the most prosperous period of Britain, they still suffered a disastrous defeat in Tianjin in 1859, and all warships were destroyed. Since then, the idea of colonizing China has been dispelled. The British turned to cooperation with the Qing, rather than conquest.
The French were also beaten by the Chinese in Vietnam in 1883. Since then, France has withdrew many rights and interests in China.

Another reason could be Chinese dynasties didn't attract much attention of west that time because most of the coastal areas of China are at east which is very far to reach.
