What is the Council of the EU?

Should Europeans directly elect their president? like in France or the US? The President of the European Commission, the head of the executive branch of the EU, is the closest the EU has to a leader. Until 2014, the President of the Commission was appointed by the European Council, comprised of each member-state's heads of state. but should this be changed to a direct election? this video will explain and analyse these options.

The Council of the EU needs to be renamed, and reformed to have less power of obstruction. The parliament should have the bigger legislative role.

Honestly, these videos on how the EU institutions work would be far better if they were 10 minutes long rather than 4 minutes. They feel rather scant and like an animated version of the summary Google search provides. You do great work in general, just suggesting that more depth on such complex workings of the EU government would be more beneficial in my opinion.

It would be a good idea to mention (maybe in a consecutive video) that the Council of the EU has *grave democracy problems* in that the ministers have an executive function in their home states yet fulfil a legislative roll in their roll in the Council. If you want to have _real_ democracy where the single member states are represented in a legislative form at EU level you'd have to set up a bicameral parliament (as many countries around the world already have) where - preferably - the second chamber is also elected by the people of the respective countries.

Good and simple video, might have been handy to include that the council of the European Union in most documents just goes by Council, the same for literature on the EU.

They really should rename it The European Council of Nations or something as it's way too easy to confuse with The Council of Europe. Plus, people should understand that it represents nation states.
