The 2025 Ford Explorer Is Sharper And More Techy, But Is That Enough?

For 2025 the Explorer gets a through refresh with updated bumpers, grilles, headlights, tail lights, and a big tech upgrade inside. But, it's still the same size as before while Toyota and GM have recently launched notably roomier SUV competitors. Also, Ford has ditched the Explorer's short lived hybrid system leaving just the 2.3L turbo and 3.0L turbo options under the hood.

Something about the grill with those headlights just doesn't mix well.

Alex: here is a cross-shop. The Explorer and the CX90. Will eagerly await when you can show us a driving impression.

The gremlin face on the dash, complete with volume knob for a toothy grin, I just can't unsee it!

I'd definitely want a new hybrid option on the Explorer, one that focuses on fuel economy rather than performance. It should be competitive with the Highlander hybrid.

I ordered an Active trim back when the order book opened. My build date was last month. Just waiting on Ford to release and deliver :-)

Great video as always Alex. I've been driving the Explorer since 1998. I lease them so I get a new one every 3 years. I agree, they need to create a hybrid that competes with Toyota, Hyundai, etc. My lease is up this month and my Platinum should be here soon. It was delayed due to Ford performing extensive testing to avoid or diminish recalls.

My question is when you get into a Blazer EV do the ICE cars drive and feel oddly old? This happens to me when I swap from my Tesla to my Honda. The quick acceleration and smooth no transmission movement just makes the thing feel great.

All that money and no hood struts? Pffft. The new grille is getting a bit BMW-ish because it's now larger than it should be.

Horrible decision to put the HVAC controls as small as they are and on the screen.

I rented an ‘24 explorer earlier this year. It had the standard turbo 4. It was peppy and brakes were good. The tech wasn’t good. Interior was cheap and plasticky. I had to move items so we laid down the second row (buckets) which revealed a big gap between that row and cargo area. RWD does help but it feel so cheap inside. I’d get the ST with 400hp and some upgrades like better front buckets. Rent one before you buy. 👍

Can you set up fans meet up. Every time you come to Detroit, I wonder it will be cool to meet you in person. Best automobile presenter on YouTube PERIOD🎉🎉 love from Detroit

Perhaps this is the last chance to get a decently priced, well engineered RWD/AWD SUV with good power and torque. Still, a naturally aspirated V6 would be a nice option. Turbocharged engines though powerful and economical are stressed and don't last as long as the more relaxed, naturally aspirated ones.

I'd love to see Ford put more hybrids in their lineup, but I also 100% get why they wanna focus on the F-150, and they're doing a phenomenal job with it.

The current gen looks fine to me. They need to fix that crappy 10 speed transmission.

Great video. I wish it had a hybrid too. Very interesting car though. Some day I want to experience that 400HP power

I find the Explorer to be a handsome car, well-equipped, with a nice interior and that it is reasonably priced.

Ford was so close with European PHEV. Bit too early on tech. Also they put sports suspension only for that. If they made one with heat pump and 25kwh+ battery, I would be interested to upgrade my Rav4 phev for that.

No turn signals in the side mirrors, is an abomination! Active trim $40K+!!!!

Did you mention towing capacity? Didn’t hear such. Overall, good first review. I’m not of fan of controls on the “screen”. Seems to be a safety issue for me.
