I love how her voice cracks and wavers off key here and there. That is exactly how it sounds if you try to sing while crying. Its extremely affecting.

Real props to Miranda Oto for this scene. Eowyn sings because she must. She physically can't let herself collapse onto the ground because she is a warrior, but the only way to stop it is to channel the pain cracking her apart into a heartfelt sendoff. You can see it building the whole time, and the open, raw agony Oto puts into the song is just amazing. I don't even know the words, but I don't need to. I've never understood why this was cut from the theatrical release. It's less than 90 seconds and it makes Theoden's breakdown with Gandalf even more powerful too, at least for me, seeing his stunned stoicism here, because that's real. If I woke up tomorrow and found out my son was dead, I don't think i would immediately break down. I think I'd be blank-faced and robotic until the moment i was alone after the funeral, or maybe until the casket was lowered, whenever I found myself with nothing else to fixate on, and then I'd lose it, because me trying to sing would just make everyone else cry for all the wrong reasons.

I'm so happy the film makers understood Tolkien's love for Saxon culture and the Old English language. The Rohirrim are Tolkien's love letter to them and their ways.

I wish this scene was in the theatrical cut. Its really moving, especially Eowyn's song and shows more of the traditions of Rohan. Its only a minute long so it would not have slowed the film down.

At 0:53 and onward the woman behind Eowyn is mouthing the words Eowyn is singing. With tears on her eyes. It's a nice attention to detail. Kinda makes me think this was a funeral song, not necessarily something Eowyn spun in the moment. A funeral song no one dared to sing because they were so stricken with grief for Theodred's death.

Idk how people hate on her and this song. Her voice is beautiful, she’s stammering bc of how much pain she is in by losing her cousin.


The lyrics are absolutely gorgeous. They capture the darkness and the pain within a few lines.

Then comes Lord of the Rings and makes you feel sad about the death of a character you never knew.
That says a lot.

The reason that the song ends so quickly and abruptly is because it’s being sung from within the tomb at that point. You can hear the echo. So when the tomb is slamed shut nothing can come back from it

I think it's beautiful. You can tell Eowyn is totally devastated and heartbroken and is barely keeping it together, this is reflected in her shaky rendition of the song. It seems like it is a tradition for the women to not only see the warriors off to battle, but also when they pass away. There is a lot of layers and nuance to this scene and I think it's unfortunate that it was cut (but luckily is in the extended edition). Very moving indeed!

It is Old English. One of the lyrics give homage to the poem Beowulf, ll. 2265b-2266: “bealocwealm hafað / fela feorhcynna forð onsended” [baleful death has sent forth many warriors].
