I love Gandalf’s reaction when he heard Sam went with Frodo. He appreciates and understands Sam’s value. It comforted him that Sam was with him. He never underestimated Sam

Ian McKellen is such a fantastic actor! He was perfect for Gandalf.

"Did he? Did he indeed? Good."

How beautiful this is.

"Cool, thanks for the update Gandalf, but I just came over to ask what time breakfast is."

“But he is not so mighty yet that he is above fear.” I swear, every line of Gandalf is perfect.

I love how Gandalf speaks hope into Aragorn "Sauron fears what you may become"

1:42

That small moment where Gandalf sees that Aragorn regrets leaving Frodo is so SO good.

The way Ian McKellen exhales at 2:05 saying "Yes, very good" carries a ton of emotion and talent. The acting at this film comes from another dimension.

What if Aragorn slowly walked away in the middle of Gandalf's monologue and he just kept speaking..

Sam.
Possibly the greatest hero in all of this story.

"It's just something Gandalf said: 'don't you lose him Samwise Gamgi', and I don't mean to"

I love how comforting Gandalf is in this scene. He’s essentially saying “yes, I know this looks terrible and we’re not out of the woods yet, but the odds are in our favour.” Ian McKellen’s performance has a gentle nature to it that feels like a friend or a family member telling you “everything’s going to be alright”. Wonderful.

Aragorn says almost nothing in this scene, but Viggo’s acting is so good that he’s saying so much with just looks and listening. And then when he finally speaks, that great uplifting, hopeful sentence that brings all the darkness and overwhelm at the greatness of their quest back to the power of friendship; “He’s not alone. Sam went with him.”

“The veiling shadow that glowers in the East takes shape. Sauron will suffer no rival. From the summit of Barad-dur his eye watches ceaselessly. But he is not so mighty yet that he is above fear.”

Peter Jackson’s idea to hire a Shakespearean actor for Gandalf was such a good decision!

Fun fact: Melkor, Sauron’s master and the original dark lord although easily the most powerful of the Valar, he was cursed with one thing no other Valar was. The ability to feel fear. This was ultimately his undoing, and a paranoia that he passed down to his servant Sauron as well. Their fear, anxiety, and apprehension was what ultimately led to both their downfalls. It made Sauron act before he was ready, and rashly. Although weak, the strength of men was tenacious and was able to take advantage of these moments when Sauron overextended himself and his forces out of fear.

Aragorn is so great here. Even though he is a king and a great warrior, he is humble enough to listen to someone else and take advice.

This is one of my favorite EE scenes. I love it because it really puts Gandalf's mission into greater perspective and I love the transition from "Yes, very good." to Sam climbing up the cliff. Just great stuff.

The sheer joy that Gandalf expresses as he learns of Sam going with Frodo is simply wonderful to watch

God when he says 'very good' his whole face lights up. His head is telling him that Frodo has to do the impossible but his heart in that moment tells him Frodo will find a way somehow, against all odds
