I used to manage a restaurant and there was a jiffy lube next door. One of my employees, a young lady, went there to get her oil changed. They figured out pretty quickly that she didn't know anything about cars so they started upselling her everything they could: ie transmission flush and refill, radiator flush and refill, brake fluid refill, washer fluid refill, power steering fluid refill... literally everything and anything they could do, and because they said she "needed it" she agreed to everything. Her $34.99 oil change ended up being just over $900 that she didn't have. She broke out into tears and had to call her dad, who was livid about the whole ordeal. When her dad got done telling them they were terrible human beings and threatened legal action, they agreed to cut the price in half, which was better but still pretty outrageous. What kind of person do you have to be to knowingly take advantage of a 17 year old girl like that?

I’ve always done oil changes and car maintenance myself. It’s done right every time!

Jiffy lube drained and filled my transmission fluid in June 2021. About 2 months later, driving down the 15, going downhill and cars going between 80-100MPH, my car locks! I almost crashed. I had to get it towed for $580. Cause I was in the middle of no where. It was a 2009 Kia spectra, always maintained it and it only had 100, 000 miles. Took it to a shop, sure enough Who ever did my transmission fluid messed up.

I have had some problems with Firestone as well. Recently I rebuilt my friend's car's suspension and I told him to get it aligned since the alignment was off after the work I did. He took it down the street to Firestone and got a lifetime alignment and the alignment was still visibly off when he got it back and they didn't give him a printout of the angles before and after. He took it to a different Firestone the next day and had them align it again, hoping they would actually do their job. But they didn't, it was still obviously screwed up. He asked for a printout of the angles before and after and he said they couldn't because their printer is broken. Yeah right, they couldn't give him a printout because they didn't touch it!

At Walmart I always stay in the room with the glass window staring them down watching every move they make. The worst mistake people make is to go shopping when your oil change is being done. Watch your oil being changed, check it after it's done then do your shopping. Your car is worth way more than anything in the store. Or better yet do it yourself.

I'm so glad my dad taught me how to do basic maintenance before I even got my first car. Probably saved me several thousand dollars over the years.

They have such a horrible reputation, but people are still ignorant enough to go there. I dont feel bad about people that get screwed by them, i just dont.

It seems that they also don't know what they're talking about. In North Carolina I went to Jiffy Lube for only an inspection. My car failed for an engine light, but the guy fed me the dumbest set of procedures for fixing it. He said I could spend $200 towards the problem, bring it back to fail again and then get a waiver from DMV. Needless to say I went to a mechanic who fixed it and no waiver was needed.

I went to the Jiffy Lube on Lane Allen Road in Lexington Kentucky and within 75 miles my truck lost all engine oil pressure. The did not change the filter an overfilled my truck. I called them immediately the manager remembered me, said he would mail me a check to reimburse for the oil change (did not receive) Now my truck won't hold oil pressure. I don't know what recourse I have? My truck had alot of miles but no issues.

About 10 years ago I went to an oil change place (forgot which one) Because it was near my job...They had a sign stating they used Kendall synthetic oil...I went around back and found them using some crappy "coastal" brand...It was already in so I just refused to pay

I personally work at a valvoline instant oil change facility and we have strict procedures we follow to ensure all services get completed correctly. I cannot speak for other locations however i have not witnessed a customer come back with a complaint about there survives at our location. People it boils down to the employees that are working at the location. Make sure you talk to and gain a level of trust before diving head first into an oil change or other services. If it feels shady it probably is. As for the price, its not just the oil you are paying for. it is the point inspection we do as well as a complete fluid and tire top off.

I used to use them on a newer car. Great service but pricey 120.00 an oil change. Then I got an older car got an oil change. Next day light came and car stopped. I brought to them they said it was not caused by them....300.00 repair they said. I took it to another shop they said it was due to cheap oil being used. A simple oil change to replace their oil and driving it a bit would fix it. 100% correct no issues ever since...

Great video Nate, I normally change my own oil and filters just for the reasons you point out, but several years ago, getting ready for a cross country trip, I took my Chevy Astro to JL for a grease job. Knowing the van had 13 zerk fittings. I thought why not, lets give JL a go and a few bucks put the van on a lift and perform the task. 14 dollars later, drove my van home. Crawling on the garage floor, under the front suspension, discovered only 4 or the zerk fitting were touched, all the upper ball joints, pitman arms, idler arms dry as a bone. Went back to JL and after a few words about what I had discovered, the manager said "oh yeah, I spoke to the mechanic he said and those hidden grease fittings are had to get to". The manager refunded 5 bucks - haven't been back to JL since.
