Doctor Who Theme | The Definitive 1963 Remaster

Remixed and mastered using HQ stems/layers in GarageBand.

This mix is as faithful and authentic to Delia Derbyshire’s original as I could make it, which didn’t have any white noise swells in the opening.
It rectifies the issues present in Mark Ayres’s 2002 and 2006 remasters, which includes missing swoops and unnecessary stereo effects.

©️TRofDW Remixes and Remasters 2021. Delia Derbyshire, Dick Mills and Ron Grainer of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

My Dad was in his teens when Doctor Who first came out. I asked him recently what his reaction to the music was. He said, "it sounded like the Martians from outer space landing. I'd never heard anything like it." That's a testament to the genius of Delia Derbyshire (and Ron Grainer), who in writing this brilliant piece was well ahead of her time. Yes, they were and still are inspiring 🙂

I read that when Derbyshire first played her arrangement for Grainer, he said "Did I write that?" And she replied "some of it."

This is what the theme sounded like to amazed audiences back in the 60s! Your restorations give a new life to the theme! I love this so much man!

ORIGINAL AND BEST!

Delia sculpted Ron’s score into a piece of timeless musical art. ❤

Doctor Who simply coming on screen with music so ahead of it's time was a total statement of power, cementing its legacy immediately

You nailed it very well, how do I know I was there in 1963, well done.

The original Derbyshire mix is my favourite hands down... and you've really cleaned it up nicely. Beautiful

This is my second favorite version of the Doctor Who theme after the Troughton-Pertwee-Tom Baker theme. Both versions have a very haunting quality to them courtesy of Delia Derbyshire's otherworldly genius.

I remember as a young child in the early 60s being terrified by the theme tune!

Wow this is how I remember it. I was but 17 when I first heard it. A bit fuzzier and furrier than this. We watched the series on our 625 TVs, it had been "Telerecorded" from the 405 line system so the image quality was questionable - the stories great and the theme amazing. Dunno why the theme has been played with over the years, the original was the best.

I heard this on TV for the first time in 1965 (age 3), it was the first music (and video) ever that blew my mind and was a major influence on my music tastes age 9+.

The first one is a classic, timeless and ahead of its time. Still sounds as if it’s coming from the future

I had a look at a clip from An Unearthly Child with this music and it's so creepy.

Is this just not the best piece of music ever made? Used to be terrified of it as a kid in the Tom Baker era. But the early themes like this one that have the more pronounced percussion side it opens with are awesome
